But still selling Blu-ray players.

RE: John Lewis top stop selling DVD players
Beginning of the end. No great surprise really. I haven't had a stand-alone player for years, always used the dvd/bd player, although I've still got my minidisc player knocking about somewhere (which I loved).
Edit: misread this as CD players. Yeah, DVD alone players completely pointless now, can't imagine they'd be any cheaper to make than BD player.

Still got my Sony DVD player, bought in 2001 and it's still going strong. That's back when they used to make decent lasers for optical pickups. It's a workhorse machine that plays everything I throw at it. The only pain is that it's a SCART machine, and I had a hard time finding a SCART TV when my old CRT widescreen set finally died.
Since 2011 I've had 2 Blu-ray players die because of laser degradation, and worse, 2 CD players die for the same reason, after just three years of use. They deliberately make short life lasers these days, force you to buy more. And then David Attenborough pops up on our 4K TVs to make us feel guilty about buying too much and wasting too much.

My two VHS players are still going strong, though shame about the VHS tapes, as they are degrading now . I have lost so many to age.
I moved onto DVD after VHS and that was it. Never bothered with Blu-ray.
Will buy a few more budget DVD players after reading above, if they are on the way out.

BD players will still play DVDs. Stockpiling old players shouldn't be necessary.

What happens when they stop selling/making Blu-ray players. Oppo have already left the market.

As long as they don't stop releasing Blu-rays worldwide...
...I kind of hope before then the industry realises the stupidity of region coding and just releases all players as multi-region.
I'm still glad that, despite 3D failing in the home, they are still releasing 3D Blu-rays.

the funny thing is, is I've got 3d blu rays, and with my sad obsession of buying Star Wars films, will no doubt buy more, that I'll never be able to watch in 3d, even though I think I can play 3d Blu rays on my PS3 and PS4, I don't have a 3d tv, and I don't think you can get them any more :(
I nearly bought a Sony 3d tv, when I bought my Panasonic Plasma, but the £2000 price tag Vs. the £1000 put me off (i.e. I was told not to spend £2000 on a tv)!
I rememember buying my first DVD player for just under £100 from Richer Sounds, an amazing "bargain" at the time, now Bandi can stock up on decent brand ones for £20 in the super market :)

I've got a 3D player too and no 3D tv. Got it "just in case". Never yet seen a 3D film.
I remember the first DVD player I saw in Dixons: £700 and the size of a briefcase.

I guess it won't be possible to play DVDs and Blurays then!
