Best and Worst Movies of 2012?

RJS (undefined) posted this on Thursday, 20th December 2012, 12:15

Watching a trailer for Dredd and pondering if it was any good, whilst thinking... "that's the soundtrack from Inception isn't it?" it makes me wonder what people thought of cinema this year.

What was your favourite movies of the year? And the ones you felt let down by? Any gems which got little publicity that others should check out?

Loved Looper, Loathed Spider Man, Just saw the hobbit and was decidedly meh tbh......Avengers was remarkable in getting so many major characters a decent part in the movie

Wasn`t blown away by Skyfall. Probably expecting too much after the massive hype about `best Bond evahhhh`. May grow to like it more on future viewings when it hits dvd...

I absolutely loved Skyfall, thought The Dark Knight Rises was very good, but just as flawed as TDK, and liked (but was ultimately disappointed by) Prometheus.

Looper, Lawless and Beasts Of The Southern Wild were excellent, as were Argo and The Cabin In The Woods.

The Avengers was a bland mess of cliches, and I have no idea why it was so well loved. That said, it wasn`t nearly as terrible as the likes of Alex Cross, Resident Evil: Retribution or the Silent Hill sequel, whatever it was called.

Many of the awards contenders (Zero Dark Thirty, Lincoln, Les Miserables, Django Unchained etc) have yet to be released in the UK, and I have yet to see The Life Of Pi or The Hobbit.

I enjoyed skyfall immensly, mainly because the previous two were such ****e. I think the worst film I saw this year was Storage 24. Crap premise, crap acting, crap alien, and crap ending.

I did like the Avengers, purely because it balanced the number of main parts very well, it wasn`t anyone`s particular movie, and pulled it off brilliantly. One more for cabin in the woods too, knackered Blu-Ray shenanigans aside

You thought Casino Royale was ****e!?

Of the biggest releases this year I really enjoyed The Dark Knight Rises, Ted, 21 Jump St and The Avengers. Spiderman was good, Skyfall was ok but expected it to be much better. Prometheus was the biggest disappointment for me, thought it would be awesome but a huge let down.

I tend to wait for dvd for the smaller films nowadays.

Prometheus was easily the worst film I saw in the cinema this year. Dreadful.

There hasn`t really been a standout for me. The Raid was awesome action cinema. Really liked Silver Linings Playbook, even if it did get a bit cliched towards the end. Dredd was a surprise even if it did have the same plot as The Raid. Beasts of the Southern Wild was good too, although I think I admired it more than I enjoyed it. Argo, Sightseers and Seven Psychopaths are all films I saw recently and enjoyed. Skyfall was great too, really surprised how much I enjoyed it given I`m not really a Bond fan. Avengers was great fun, and I liked Dark Knight Rises with some pretty big reservations. The Hobbit was nice too, but I was far too distracted by the 48fps novelty to fully appreciate it.

I missed my foreign quota this year, need to catch Amour, Rust & Bone and a few others.

I loved Looper, Possibly film of the year for me.
I thought The Dark Knight Rises was going to struggle to satisfy my appetite as The Dark Knight set the bench mark so high, Sadly I was right.
Ted was ok but suffered from most of the best bits being shown in the trailers however Sam Jones scenes were awesome.
The Avengers was brilliant, I wasn`t sure about Mark Ruffalo taking over as Banner cause I hadn`t seen much of his previous stuff ...................... Turns out he was perfect for the role.

It wasn`t what I knew Bond to be. hated it. That said, I said the same about hellboy but I`ve come to like that

I have a few more to see before the year`s out (Hobbit, Pitch Perfect, and Jack Reacher as I was too ill to go to the preview this week). That`s assuming we don`t all die tomorrow obviously. Anyway, here`s what I`ve seen this year with a brief word next to each:

The Darkest Hour - Worst £80 I`ve ever spent (caught doing 35 -n a 30 on the way and had to do the course)
Haywire - Uterly forgetful
The Grey - Neeson fights wolves. Daft but sporadically enjoyable.
Chronicle - Surprised how much I enjoyed it - best found footage film I’ve seen in ages.
The Descendants - One of the better dramas I’ve seen this year.
Young Adult - CT is always lovely, but not as dark or funny as it needed to be.
The Muppets - Try as I might, I just couldn’t accept them as the Muppets of old.
Safe House - Safe as in boring, yes.
John Carter - I didn’t hate it, but I can see why people stayed away.
21 Jump Street - Watched it again recently and laughed more than I’d like to admit.
The Hunger Games - Borning, neutered Battle Royale for kids.
Wrath of the Titans - Worse than the first one. Enough said.
Mirror Mirror - Another forgettable one this, but inoffensive.
Battleship - I liked it. I’m seeking professional help...
The Cabin in the Woods - Enjoyed this in a chin stroking, head nodding way.
Lockout - Utter rubbish. Candidate for the worst of the year for me.
The Avengers - Liked how it all came together (it could have been a mess). Good fun.
The Avengers - Went with the Mrs and enjoyed it the second time as well.
American Reunion - Meh. That’s all really. Lightning doesn’t strike etc.
The Raid - Great fun - the brutal fight sequences were enough to overlook the paper-thin plot.
Safe - One of the batter ‘Stath’ movies for my money, although still a Stath movie...
Men in Black 3 - Why did I got to see this? Oh yes, I was bored.Prometheus - Biggest letdown of the year. What a wasted opportunity.
Jaws - Best films I’ve seen all year! ;)
Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - About as middle of the road as you can get.
The Amazing Spider-Man - I enjoyed it more than The Dark Knight Rises...
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World - Prophetic? Quirky, enjoyable comedy.
The Dark Knight Rises - Bloated, boring and full of plot holes.
Ted - About as funny as most recent Family Guy episodes, so not very.
Bourne Legacy - The Bored Legacy would have been more apt.
Expendables 2 - Better than the first, but it didn’t have far to climb.
The Watch - I hope they paid Ayoade a lot of money to appear in this...
Total Recall - If this film were a colour, it would be beige. The remake no one asked for...
Brave - Not my favourite Pixar, but still very well done.
Looper - I wasn’t as keen as some, but it was enjoyable.
Killing Them Softly - Not particularly memorable.
Taken 2 - The other contender for ‘worst of year’.
Ruby Sparks - Nice, quirky rom-com.
Hotel Transylvania - Decent enough animation, but it’s not Pixar.
Skyfall - Better than Quantum, but not a patch on Casino Royale.
Argo - Another one that I found surprisingly enjoyable.
End of Watch - Really gritty cop drama with good performances.
Silver Linings Playbook - Oscar fodder with decent leads, but too contrived.
The Man with the Iron Fists - Only slightly above Taken 2 Lockout
Nativity 2 - Mrs made me see it; lacks the heart of the first one, but it`s Christmas so...
Life of Pi - Visually stunning but ultimately simplistic allegory.
Gremlins - This is more like it - a proper Christmas film! Finally got to see it on the big screen :)
The Oranges - Better than I’d been led to believe.
Rise of the Guardians - Mediocre animated tale.

Best of the year? I’m hoping I still haven’t seen it as nothing’s really impressed me theatrically. End of Watch was very good, as was Argo, but it says a lot that the best film I saw all year was originally released in 1975.
