Star Wars Trilogy (Extended U.S Version)

Craig b (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 11th September 2004, 10:46

Hi Guys

Just spotted above at www.dvdworldusa.com.They seem to be making a fuss about this as shown by their remarks:

Full U.S. Version, Over 26 Minutes Longer than the Region 2 U.K. Release...Don`t settle for less...

Does anyone know in what way it is 26 mins longer?
I thought that the set was identical across the regions, barring the odd subtitle difference.
Any information on this would be most welcome.

Cheers
Craig

Probably the 4% difference between PAL and NTSC.

dvdworldusa.com are just taking the p*** out of gullible customers. I wouldn`t worry about it.

Yup, looks like they`re showing their true colors as money grabbing twats..

Just sent this to their feedback dept..

I would like to complain about your description of the R1 edition of The Star Wars Trilogy on DVD. At the top of the page you state "Full U.S. Version, Over 26 Minutes Longer than the Region 2 U.K. Release...Don`t settle for less..." As far as I`m concerned (as well as several of my internet correspondants) this is damn close to false advertising.
As you are in the business, you should be well aware that the `extra 26 minutes` is a result of the 4% difference between PAL & NTSC playback.
Those not as `in the know` as you and I could very well believe that if they were to buy their copy from you (who are the only retailer advertising this `bonus`) they could very well assume the R1 copies are different from the R2 ones. Which you know as well as I, they are not.

I`ll let you know if they get back to me

Cinema speed runs at 24 frames per second.

PAL runs at 25 frames per second, so speeds up the film speed by 4%. So every 2 hours of film speed will be 1 hour and 55 minutes PAL speed. 5 minutes over 2 hours does seem like a lot, but it`s just 4%.

NTSC runs at 30 frames per second (or 29.97 to be more accurate), but using a method called 3:2 pulldown they keep the correct "24 frames per second" by repeating some half frames. This makes the picture very slight jerky.

I`m guessing the scummy company advertising this are including the special features in the running time to get the 26 minutes, as the trilogy is just under 16 minutes shorter on PAL compared to NTSC.

But PAL has higher resolution, so PAL is technically better whatever way you look at it, but both formats have their pros and cons and at the end of the day it`s a personal preference ;)

Beat me to it ;)

Its pretty bad though having to lie about the product saying the R2 set is missing 26mins when they are identical, must be desperate for sells lol

Seeing as this is company whose sole aim is to sell dvds, and whoever creates the write up is unlikely to be a technology buff, isn`t it possible they are simply misinformed, rather than cunningly devious?

To look at the contrasting running times and assume the Region 2 PAL edition has missing minutes would be a simple mistake.

But then again, they could be opertunistic, devilish b[at]sdrats!

Who knows? :D
