Oh, bat ya arse.
RE: U-571
Are you all yanks? Surely any self-respecting Brit hasn`t seen this on principle, let alone buy it!
And don`t get me started on The Patriot...
RE: Hollow Man for £11.99 inc P&P a bargain
So, how many of you are plants? I don`t know a single person who considered this film to be anything but a disgrace.
Some people.
www.deepdiscountdvd.com
Has anybody used deepdiscountdvd.com? Based in US. Their international shipping costs $5.95 (DHL) and they say that it takes 7-14 days. Reliable? Any horror stories? I`m after `Pi` and they sell it for $9.90.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Memento and Requiem for a Dream
Does anybody know when the two films above are due for release? I have conflicting dates regarding Requiem (March/May?!), and cannot find any mention of Memento.
Thanks

Aliens 4-disk set
I`m after the above - the cheapest I can find it in the UK is £70, I can find it for £50 R1, but there is of course import tax. Does anybody know where I can pick it up cheapest?
Cheers
Why?
So why was O Brother released over here first? The Coen Brothers aren`t English are they? Or maybe I`m showing my lack of knowledge!?! Surely it was financed by US Dollars!!!
O` Brother Where (the f...) Art Thou?!!!
Has anybody heard of any news as to when this film is coming out (R1 of course)

RE: Audio setup...cont
Cheers.
I`ll avoid the Moviemaxx then.
One more thing - would it sensible to buy a centre at the same time to make sure that they have the same tone / are okay together? I`ll speak to Richer obviously, but just wondered if anybody has any opinions.
Mark
RE: Audio setup...cont
Cheers Shaun.
I`ll have to organise a test at Richer - only prob is that I don`t think the one in Sheffield has an A/V testing facility. Still, I guess I can always get an idea by hooking the speakers up to a CD Player.

Audio setup...cont
A couple of questions...
Which would be better to use as front speakers (and with cd tracks):
Eltax Monitor 3 (90w)
or
Mission 700 (75w)
Both £60 at Richer Sounds
I would (probably) be using a Kenwood DD receiver (a basic one).
Secondly, I`ve just spotted in the Richer Sounds brochure-thing a `Moviemaxx Speaker Package` from Eltax for £120 - two floorstanding fronts, two rears and a centre. Would this be worth looking into, or would the sound be poor compared to the above speakers (for £60 per pair)? I would, of course, have to invest in other speakers at a later date if I went for the former option.
If anybody has any experience/opinions on the above, and has managed to follow my ramblings, could you let me know please. I really don`t know what to do.
Cheers

RE: Audio setup...any opinions please?...
Thanks for that.
As you say, it`s pretty upgradable at a later date - that`s what I`m after really.

RE: Orac, how`s it going?(in MY opinion - you have had your say guys(again and again and again...))
Hi Orac,
Yep - also ordered from DVD Boxoffice - still waiting.
I got an email from them (my second one, a few days ago) saying something like "see this as a shipping notice".
Still waiting...

Audio setup...any opinions please?...
Right. Got me Aiwa 370 sorted, now it`s time to start thinking about the audio setup.
Been into Richer Sounds this afternoon and have got an idea of how to start...
With a max budget of £200 (at the moment)...
Kenwood KRVF5030 (Dolby Digital receiver - 80w p/c) £120
Eltax Monitor 3, 90w B (Speakers) £60
Cable £20
From there I`m obviously going to get more speakers, a sub etc (when cash flow imporves!).
So, what d`ya reckon? A decent place to start? The only thing that concerns me is that it doesn`t decode DTS - does this really matter? The Aiwa 370 has a sticker on the front saying `DTS` so I presume it outputs this okay so it could be set up with DTS. Do DTS discs also have the normal Dolby Digital as well? If so then I`m prbably not that bothered.
Any opinions and alternative suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

RE: Orac, how`s it going?
Glad to hear you finally got one!
Yep, mine`s well and truly settled into its surroundings now. All I`ve got to do now is buy some DVDs! Renting and borrowing off mates is fine but...you know what I mean.
I`ve got High Fidelity on its way from Canada (hopefully!). Although I haven`t tried the region-hack yet...maybe I`m tempting fate, having bought before trying! Have you got it sorted yet?
I`m trying desperately to budget for a Digital Surround setup now - just been to Richer sounds and have got an idea of how to start. Might wait until my next bank statement comes through - I owed some dosh to my sister that I`d forgotten about, so recalculation is called for, unfortunately!
I think I`ll post a new thread asking for opinions on my idea for setting this up.
Cheers

Orac, how`s it going?
Just wondered if you`ve heard from C***t yet - what ya doing about it?

RE: Aiwa 370 connections - Scart / S Video
Cheers for everybody`s help - much appreciated.
I`ve got the b+w thing sorted now - I hadn`t got the tv`s input that I was using set to receive S-Video - changed it using the on-screen menu from `A/V` to `S-Video` and it`s fine now.
HURRAH!!!
RE: Aiwa 370 connections - Scart / S Video
Yep - I`ve got a fine picture now, thanks.
Something still doesn`t exactly make sense, though! Refering to the b&w problem - I`ve definitely got the DVD player outputting S-Video (although according to the DVD Manual, the Aiwa doesn`t output S-Video through the SCART at all - only through the 4-pin! - Jimbo can you confirm this is right?). So, when I`ve ONLY got the 4-pin adapter connected it`s in b&w - when I push the SCART in as well, it`s fine - although it is definitely outputting S-Video because when I switch (on the DVD setup menu) from S-Video to Composite the picture changes (in tone - as I said earlier, S-Video is brighter). So, in summary (Goddam this is longwinded - sorry!), to get a colour S-Video picture I need to have a SCART lead and 4-Pin connected.
I know it doesn`t really matter `cause I`ve got both a SCART (although cheap) lead and a 4-pin connector. Just wondering why, really! So, if anybody (jimbo - you seem to know a lot about the Aiwa 370!) has any explanation then I`m interested. Sad, eh?! (NB rhetoric comment, please no comment, oh sarcastic ones!)
Cheers

RE: Aiwa 370 connections - Scart / S Video
B**tards!
I bet they`ve already charged your c/c as well - they charged mine a week before it was delivered - cheeky gets!
I`ve set mine up - tried it using component (through scart) and S-Video (through round 4-pin connector), and both are fine - S-Video is a lot `brighter`. Is this normal. Also, when I try to play S-Video without the scart lead in as well as the S-Video connector it plays in Black and White!! Is this normal? If anyone could let me know please do.

PS Keep trying Orac...
Aiwa 370 connections - Scart / S Video
I know this has been covered in various forms before, so apologies. But could somebody help me...
It says in the Aiwa manual that the SCART does not output S-Video (so do not set it to play S-Video...). However, my TV (Toshiba) has two spare SCART sockets - both of which have "S-Video" written next to them! The SCART that is already being used (by the video) doesn`t have anything written next to it. Also, one of the two spare S-Video SCART sockets has a round, S-Video connector (that could connect to the round S-Video output on the Aiwa).
So, firstly, what do I buy - a SCART or (round) S-Video lead(ie which will probably be best quality). Secondly, if I need to use a SCART lead, do I connect it through one of the two "S-Video" SCART sockets on my TV, and do I tell the DVD player to output S-Video or not.
Please Help!!!!
Thanks
Mark
PS - Have you sorted yours out yet, Orac?
RE: A couple of questions from a beginner!
I was told by the girl over the telephone that I could get a full refund within 7 days - I, as you have, questioned this. She was very specific when she said that, although if you buy a product from a store they will not issue a refund without good reason, if you order from Comet Central and get it delivered (for a small delivery charge) then you can take it into any store, quote your sales number (which indicates that it`s a delivery order) and they will give you a full refund.
Apparently the idea is that if you order by delivery you probably haven`t seen the product work, so have the right to test it first.
Admitedly, if I was to take it into the store after a couple of days for a refund I would probably spend half an hour explaining this to some incompetent 17 year-old member of staff, who wouldn`t know a refund if it bit him on the arse, but I have the girl`s name (written down somewhere!) so am pretty confident that I could get a refund.
I am, of course, hoping that I won`t need a refund!

RE: A couple of questions from a beginner!
Thanks for your help.
I`ve gone for the Aiwa (MP3 bonus), but can return it within a week if I`m not happy with it - then I`ll go for the Pioneer. Arriving Friday...
RE: Where can I buy an Aiwa 370 Online?
Cheers for all your help and advice over the last few days.
Have got one on its way to me by Comet delivery. God knows what colour it`s gonna be though - forgot to ask!
RE: Another AIWA 370 happy customer (at the moment!)
I am also expecting an Aiwa 370 this Friday - being shipped from Ipswich to me in P`boro by Comet.
A bonus of ordering by mail with Comet is that they will give you a full refund within the first 7 days no questions asked, as opposed to when you buy it from a Comet store, when their returns policy appears to be much stricter. So, if I`m not completely happy, I can get my dosh back and get a Pioneer.
ROLL ON FRIDAY...
Where can I buy an Aiwa 370 Online?
Does anybody know?
Mark
UK Websites?
Can someone tell me the best website/s to buy R2 DVDs from in the UK.
Thanks
Mark
Just an idea...
There are lots of questions floating about (including from me!) regarding RCE and which disks include it, and which players can cope with it, etc.
Would it be good to have a web page dedicated to listing the RCE encoded DVDs, and which Multi-region players play them? Is there one already. Quite a simple thing to do I would think.
Just a thought.
Mark
RE: A couple of questions from a beginner!
Yes - thanks.
Specifically, what about the Aiwa 370 (much talked about on these pages!) - will this play RCE DVDs?
Also, what about the Pioneer 530? I presume it may struggle because it is defined as "multi-regional", but you can also select the region manually.
If anybody knows the answers could they post a reply. Thanks - any help much appreciated!
