Aiwa 370 connections - Scart / S Video

Mark Field (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Friday, 5th January 2001, 15:31

I know this has been covered in various forms before, so apologies. But could somebody help me...

It says in the Aiwa manual that the SCART does not output S-Video (so do not set it to play S-Video...). However, my TV (Toshiba) has two spare SCART sockets - both of which have "S-Video" written next to them! The SCART that is already being used (by the video) doesn`t have anything written next to it. Also, one of the two spare S-Video SCART sockets has a round, S-Video connector (that could connect to the round S-Video output on the Aiwa).

So, firstly, what do I buy - a SCART or (round) S-Video lead(ie which will probably be best quality). Secondly, if I need to use a SCART lead, do I connect it through one of the two "S-Video" SCART sockets on my TV, and do I tell the DVD player to output S-Video or not.

Please Help!!!!

Thanks

Mark

PS - Have you sorted yours out yet, Orac?

My wife waited in and I am fuming! Comet management are phoning thisarvo.

B**tards!

I bet they`ve already charged your c/c as well - they charged mine a week before it was delivered - cheeky gets!

I`ve set mine up - tried it using component (through scart) and S-Video (through round 4-pin connector), and both are fine - S-Video is a lot `brighter`. Is this normal. Also, when I try to play S-Video without the scart lead in as well as the S-Video connector it plays in Black and White!! Is this normal? If anyone could let me know please do.

Mark

PS Keep trying Orac...

Most modern TVs have 3 SCARTs; AV1 is normally a type 1 SCART which will accept CVBS (composite video) and also RGB (these are switched by menu option on the player and communicated to the TV by means of a hi/lo voltage on one of the SCART pins). AV2 and AV3 are both type 2 SCARTs - these will accept CVBS or S-video. In this case the switch is usually (always?) done by menu selction on the TV. AV2 and AV3 also usually have a separate 4 pin connector which is wired in parallel with the Y/C signals on the SCARTs.

So, to answer your question - you can use AV1 for an RGB connection or either AV2 or AV3 for an S-video connection using either SCART or 4pin - it doesn`t matter. The general conscenus seems to be that RGB is the better option with S-video a close second.

To answer your second post. Yes, it is normal for S-video to give a more colorful, more vivid picture. As for the black and white business...my guess (and it is only that) is as follows. From your description it seems that you are plugging the DVD SCART into the TV SCART with associated S-video connector; ie you are connecting a SCART type 1 output to a SCART type 2 input (AV2 or AV3). This will certainly confuse things - my guess is that the TV is expecting an S-video Y/C signal but is only getting a CVBS signal on the luminance (Y) pin which it will show as b/w (possibly because you haven`t set the DVD to S-video). NB: on a type 2 SCART (and it`s parallel 4 pin?) the Y luminance signal shares a pin with the CVBS signal. To extend the guesswork - when the SCART is plugged in then the CVBS/RGB hi/lo switch control signal forces the TV to expect CVBS and recognise the colour elemnt of the signal (it shouldn`t really do that on a type 2 - but probably does).

If I were you I would set the DVD for `component` output, connect the DVD SCART to the AV1 SCART on your TV (both type 1) and that should be it. You can then connect your VCR to AV2/AV3 setting it on the TV to `video` or `S-video` depending on whether you have an S-VHS VCR or not.

I hope that hasn`t been too confusing. If you post a few more details then I or someone else may be able to help further.

Yep - I`ve got a fine picture now, thanks.

Something still doesn`t exactly make sense, though! Refering to the b&w problem - I`ve definitely got the DVD player outputting S-Video (although according to the DVD Manual, the Aiwa doesn`t output S-Video through the SCART at all - only through the 4-pin! - Jimbo can you confirm this is right?). So, when I`ve ONLY got the 4-pin adapter connected it`s in b&w - when I push the SCART in as well, it`s fine - although it is definitely outputting S-Video because when I switch (on the DVD setup menu) from S-Video to Composite the picture changes (in tone - as I said earlier, S-Video is brighter). So, in summary (Goddam this is longwinded - sorry!), to get a colour S-Video picture I need to have a SCART lead and 4-Pin connected.

I know it doesn`t really matter `cause I`ve got both a SCART (although cheap) lead and a 4-pin connector. Just wondering why, really! So, if anybody (jimbo - you seem to know a lot about the Aiwa 370!) has any explanation then I`m interested. Sad, eh?! (NB rhetoric comment, please no comment, oh sarcastic ones!)

Cheers

Mark

Yeah, Comet don`t half feed you s***e.

Phoned the national number and spoke to a guy - yes I did get his name - and he said "yes, the AIWA 370 is available on buy now pay in 6 months" - I thought, not a bad deal and although I could get it cheaper on the net, I thought I may as well benefit. Went to one of my local stores and said, "I`m interested in one of these, you can do it on 6mths int free can`t you".

You can guess what`s coming, "no chance!! mate" - basically who are you trying to kid? I gave the spiel that I spoke to Comet national - gave him the number - and said I even had the chaps name who I spoke to. I really felt like a twat as I`m sure they thought I was takin` the p***.

And surprise, surprise, a call to Comet revealed that no one by that name worked there. I went on the phone myself - in the shop - really p***ed off at this mysterious guy who didn`t exist - I felt like I was trying to prove I was telling the truth.

Anyway, I have to applaud the floor manager for being extremely pleasant (and the sales chap) - although they still probably thought I may have been takin` the p***. Head Office "looked" into it but could not find who gave me this s***e info - I mean, their investigations commenced with them asking me "hold old do you think the guy was?" - well, he sounded about, well 23, 24 - comon` , how many people do you speak to that you could put an age on - alright if there are 6 or 7 people, perhaps they should have offered to do a voice check with me!!!, but when the guy said there are 500 or so people here what friggin` chance have they got. Well I suppose because he was `male` they could probably eliminate half!

Anyway, HQ offered me one on 3mths interest free - but not before he said, "well, we`ll have to send you the forms out - with New Year and all that it may not get there until Thursday, then you have to send them back and we have to sort the rest of the paperwork out and then we can arrange for a machine to be despatched" - yeah, as if they`d have any left by then. In any case I thought sod it, so I just went and got one.

Morale of the story, don`t just get a name, get the name of their boss, the exact section they work in, their telephone extension number and anything else that you may need. Nearly got ripped off with the RAC like this - but that`s another story!!!!

Baaaastaaaards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not quite right, according to the manual, the scart doesn`t output ANY video signal on Svideo..which is garbage, as mine does the same as yours!!!
It DOES play Svid through the scart but for some reason, the manual says it doesn`t!?!?!

On your B/W problem..if you`re using R1 or NTSC discs, set the switch on the back to PAL, then turn the player off and back on, otherwise ensure that "S" mode is enabled on the telly.

AIWA 370 (officially) ROCKS!!!!!!!!

Cheers for everybody`s help - much appreciated.

I`ve got the b+w thing sorted now - I hadn`t got the tv`s input that I was using set to receive S-Video - changed it using the on-screen menu from `A/V` to `S-Video` and it`s fine now.

HURRAH!!!
