No I`m not. The media reaction was over the top as well and as I mentioned both fed off each other but I still maintain the police reaction was excessive.
Without rehearsing the same arguments I`ll just make two points.
Firstly we have so demonised firearms in this country that the mere mention of one draws the same reaction as an invasion by some foreign power. Check back to levels of reaction during the IRA campaign in this country or, even more recently, how many officers were involved in the pursuit and shooting of Mr Menezes who they firmly believed was a trained terrorist.
Secondly I`d suggest sitting back and waiting for the reaction as the press, with no sense of irony at all, will now start querying the levels of police commitment and prod the politicians into some kind of enquiry on the matter.
Thank you for your instant summation of my entire thought process on the commitment of troops in Afghanistan.
For my opinions on anything else please contact Mr Tea who appears to have appointed himself my own Max Clifford.

Very eloquent Mr Snaps, I`m sure you were the pride of the Student Union Bar, but unfortunately much like the politicians you denounce so readily, you've failed to answer the question I asked. So again, would you be willing to do the job of those officers in the area at the time?
The situation was contained and dealt with effectively, with no further loss of life and to that end it was successful. Maybe if you had been a resident of Rothbury you may have had a more sympathetic view.
But then judging by your comments so far, probably not.

Sorry, couldn`t disagree more.
The level of police activity for basically a domestic gone wrong is ludicrous, up to and including the final `stand off` with 10 armed officers surrounding him. I suspect he was hoping for suicide by police officer which is the reason for `declaring war` on the police in the first place and the 6 hour wait until he finally did himself.
Whilst your disagreeing with me just ask yourself one question.
What do you think the level of response would be if the weapon had been a knife.
We`ve had a senior officer from the Tony Blair school of eloqution trying her level best to sound as earnest as possible having called in every officer who`s ever even seen a gun from seemingly every force in the country.
We`ve had obsequious reporters with their noses buried up the arse of anything above inspector and last night the entire Stephen Nolan program on 5Live was turned over to live coverage of one sad prat sat on a river bank with Nolan doing his level best to resurrect the hushed measured tones of Richard Dimbleby commentating on a royal wedding or Churchills funeral.
Over the top doesn`t even begin to cover it.

I think you`re confusing the media circus of this event with the actual actions of the police.
Its easy for you to say `over the top` but at the end of the day your not the bobby on the street who`s job it is to try to flush out this crackpot. And I`m not talking about the armed response officers, who are kitted out with all the weaponary, more your average copper who will be equipped with a can of gas and a 2ft long baton. After this guy has said he will be targetting police specifically, you`ve then go to go out and do a job, not knowing where this guy is hiding.
And your knife comparison is irrelevant, it wasnt a knife and I know which I would rather face.
Its easy for you to sit in front of your keyboard and criticise, but put yourself in the shoes of those in the front line and I`m sure you wouldn`t be as vocal.
I bet you disagree with actions of the troops in Afgan too, at the end of the day they are doing a job that few of us would have the guts to do.
Rant over.

RE: 1 Yr - Nokia Satellite Navigation License - £5
Lets be honest, the normal price should be about £5 anyway. How Nokia can justify asking £60 for a year is beyond me. A standalone Sat nav can be bought for less than that.
I got a 3 year license when I bought my Nokia N95 about 18 months ago and I think it cost me about £40.00. When I upgraded to the 5800 I was really shocked to see how much they had increased the license prices to.
Luckly I was able to transfer the balance of the three years over to my new phone, but I certainly wont be renewing it if the prices remain as they are.

RE: PS3.... The 3 Beeps Of Death ? or am i just unlucky :(
Ogster,
Really sorry, I`ve only just got back from holiday and seen your reply. I would have repaired it for you for the cost of postage but it looks like you`ve got rid of it now.
I would have had to have used the heat gun but I`ve repaired 3 now and all are still working fine.
Shame I would have liked to have helped as you`ve been a mine of information for me in the past on here. Sorry again.

RE: PS3.... The 3 Beeps Of Death ? or am i just unlucky :(
Ogster,
If it is powering on for a second, power light going yellow and then beeps and flashing red it should be quite a straightforward fix but it involves opening up your PS3.
Give me a shout if this is the problem you have and I`ll see if I can help,
Cheers,
Rich.
RE: Netbooks - Any good for basic gaming ?
Haven`t had time to reply but thanks for all the help and suggestions offered.
I got the Advent 4213 in the end as I got a very good price on it. Must say I`m very impressed so far. As for the gaming side of it, I`ve installed a N64 emulator which runs brilliantly (still love Goldeneye!) and am also playing the original Delta Force, which is great for a quick FPS fix !
Thanks again,
Rich.
RE: Netbooks - Any good for basic gaming ?
Thanks for the replies.
Ogster - I`ve been looking at the Advent 4213, how much was your memory upgrade as that would be something I would look to do. I can see from the other threads that you`re happy with your 4211.
Anything else recommended at about the £250 mark ?
cheers,
Rich
Netbooks - Any good for basic gaming ?
I`m looking to get a netbook shortly, mainly for surfing the net, and have seen the various threads on here which relate to them.
However is there any difference in performance, and would they be able to run old basic games (Couple of old favorites, Half-Life and Unreal for example). None of them seem to list anything with regards to graphics chips (shared etc)?
I`m not really bothered about massive amounts of storage or battery life and looking to spend about £250, any recommendations.
Am I being unrealistic and are they only suited for going online ?
Thanks,
Rich.
RE: X-Box game offer- Lego Indiana Jones & Kung Fu Panda Bundle £9.99

Many thanks for the heads-up,
Rich.
RE: Anyone know anything about Mountain/Road/Hybrid Bikes ?
Yeah, Government cycle scheme is a good idea in theory, and my employer does offer it, but the two people I know who have used it say it is a nightmare. Blood and stone come to mind!
Thanks for all the advice, sus forks and ally frame in the post-Xmas sales seems to be the way to go.
Cheers all,
Rich.
RE: Anyone know anything about Mountain/Road/Hybrid Bikes ?
Cheers for all the replies, appreciated.
When I said `Road` bike I did mean the old style racing bike. Looks as though these will be a non starter then. I`ll take a look at the Carrera brands, although to be honest I have been put off of Halfords a little bit as the kids bikes I`ve bought from them in the past have, frankly, been rubbish, but of course they are at the bottom end of the scale.
I would presume a aluminium frame would be a must ?
thanks again,
Rich.
Anyone know anything about Mountain/Road/Hybrid Bikes ?
Hi,
I`m looking to start cycling to work soon and I wanna get a new bike. At present I have a sub £100 generic steel framed mountain bike, which to be honest is a bit heavy and it always feels like most of the pedalling effort I put in goes through the dual suspension :( .
So I`m thinking about a road bike (aluminum frame), looking at these models they seem to be very lightweight but are they tuff enough ? I will primarily be riding on roads but occasionally will need to go up and down kerbs etc, can they do this ?
I`ve also read about hybrid bikes, would this be more suitable ?
Also has anyone got any idea of how much I would need to spend to get a half decent one ? My thoughts at the minute is that i will spend £200 to £250, Is this realistic ?
Sorry for all the questions, but i dont really know where to start and normally someone on here knows something ;) !
Thanks in advance,
Rich.
PS. Quite like the look of this [url]http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.200-7551.aspx[url]
or is it cheap rubbish ?

RE: anyone bought a tent online?
Maybe too small for you but a couple of days ago I bought a 2 man tent, 2 sleeping bags and 2 foam mats in a `festival pack` at ALDI for only £9.99! Came packed in a big strong canvas holdall which is probably worth £9.99 on its own.
Cheers,
Rich.
RE: got a child born between 1986/2003 then claim tax owed to you
Quote:
I don`t have time to go and visit my tax office (perish the thought!), ergo I won`t get the rebate. The system is stupid. I had 2 kids during that period, so apparently I`m entitled to £1040, which isn`t to be sniffed at!
But surely if there genuinely is a chance of getting this amount back its worth sacrificing the £94 `admin` fee ?
Just a thought?
Rich.

Many Thanks to OP,
Picked one up today and it is the HDMI version, manufactured August 07, so well happy.
Also gone for the £100 LCD TV in the other thread, so I`ll be well pleased if that comes off and end up with a 360 HD set up for £350 all in !!

RE: 360 Premium, Mega Pack, Halo 3 and any other game - £250
Is this the `old` version? i.e the one which is prone to overheating
I was told to avoid this version and go for the newer one with HDMI port, does anyone know anything about this ?
Cheers,
Rich.
