9 reasons why Blu-ray will succeed - Interesting article worth a read!!

Interesting article on CNET (its from an American viewpoint, but still valid!)

Makes some very interesting points against digital downloads, and for once its some positive press on BD`s rather than the usual pointless negative comments i tend to read on google news on my lunch break!

RE: Going to buy a BluRay Player next Friday, what should we watch first?

I second the Speed Racer recommendation! Its a great movie, and the PQ is amazing!!

or

My other recommendation would be for the Dark Knight, as the Imax scenes are breathtaking!

RE: BluRay/DVD Double Packs From Disney

Well may be i`m mssing something here but Sleeping Beauty comes with BD and DVD. It generally sells for around £16 online and about £20 in the shops. Which is the standard price for a BD so no real increase. I think its a good idea, specially if they continue to charge the standard price for it! I myself would never use the DVD version (and in fact i`m tempted when i get SB to sell the dvd with out a box!) but can see that its handy if you have kids!

You can also pick SB up for around £12.50 via HMV`s 2 for £25 (thats if you want to tempt fate by using the god aweful HMV! Ive been waiting nearly three weeks for my 2001 BD!!)

RE: 24 Redemption HD Recorded on Sky HD Query

I`ve had this problem a couple of times with my Sky+ box, but have never raised it with Sky or investigated further as have taken it for granted that its just a corrupted recording.

Sorry i couldnt be more helpful.

RE: New Doctor Who To Be Revealed Today

Well i was alittle disappointed as i had just got to liking the idea of Paterson Joseph as the Dr, but it dawned on me earlier that they were so likely to use an unknown. and ive got to say i`m quite happy with their choice. The age thing will take some getting used to, but i`ve always wanted them to continue with the Dr`s appearance getting younger as it makes (in a weird sci-fi way) logical sense.

Ive got a gut feeling it may be Paterson Joseph, who i wasnt keen on to start with but since watching Survivors he`s really grown on me.

RE: Watched Rambo & No Country For Old Men on Bluray

See i actually enjoyed the new indy flick, but i can see why alot of people disliked it. It has many obvious flaws, but IMO its quite an enjoyable ride of a movie. And i went in knowing full well what the twist was as had read an article in Vanity Fair with George Lucas about the MacGuffin.

RE: Watched Rambo & No Country For Old Men on Bluray

the film reaches its conclusion, there is nothing further to be said. The inspiring part is what it leaves for the viewer to decide from what has been put forward from the story. In its simplest form its an understanding of the title ..... No country for old men. But in its deeper meaning its a look at a country that has moved on... and to be honest far to detailed to explain here but IMO i love a film that lets you leave the cinema thinking!! Rather than this is A and heres how we get to B.

RE: Watched Rambo & No Country For Old Men on Bluray

Basbat - I dont think the coen brothers ran out of film, i just think you didnt get the ending! IMO the ending was inspiring......

You also dont seem to be able to apply logic to situations... I give you one guess why Batman forces a gravely voice!.....maybe because 1. He is portraying a dark and foreboding character to strike fear in to people (see the first film!) 2. He needs to make sure no one recognises him as Bruce Wayne......duh!! I know alot of people dont like the voice, but after watching DK for a 4th time last night i can find no problem with it! In fact Alfred makes a joke in the graphic novel Batman and Son, that he needs to make sure he doesnt use the voice when he`s out as Bruce as he`s been doing his Batman voice for to long that its starting to become his voice!!

RE: Now Zavvi has bitten the dust...

Well recently Zavvi have had some good prics on there Blu Rays (Matrix 24.99!) But to be honest i used to work for Virgin, and the stores were a sinking ship back before Zavvi took over so it would have taken much for them to go under. I very much doubt that HMV will suffer as there website seems to get alot of business and i think they are owned by quite a big retailer (cant remember their name!)

Not to sound like a `vulture` but i do hope Zavvi have a clearout like woolworths as their back cat stuff is far better!!

RE: Watched Rambo & No Country For Old Men on Bluray

I watched From Russia With Love on Sunday afternoon on Blu and was in awe at how amazing the Lowry Digital Restoration process has worked! It really must be seen to be believed. The film is about 44/45 years old and it looks fairly modern considering (apart from the obvious dated fashion etc.). It certainly made me want to get all the Connery Bond on BD!

Hoping to get Wall-E for X-mas! If not will pick it up on Boxing Day!!

Roughly something like this:

It would remind me of the good old pan and scan days of VHS! Those were the crazy days when they liked to cut off chunks of the shot, and add in fake camera pans!!

Do we really want to be going there again!

I remember for years arguing the case for widescreen films, people really couldnt understand what was being done to the picture. I think Die Hard used to have a short trailer at the start explaining how widescreen ratios worked, and from there it suddenly became the norm to include the widescreen version on the VHS/DVD, and like now we see with Blu ray we are not only getting what was intended. but also much much more!!

What does everyone think of the HD soundtrack?

RE: The Dark Knight on BD....Whats going on???

I`m surprised they didnt do a branched version, but i`m really not fussed as the IMAX bits look so amazing (it just makes me wish they shot the whole thing with IMAX!) but i fully understand why the ratio shifts and as its a cut rather than a transition i really dont get effected by the change.

So i`m on the fence on the one hand i can understand why people are complaining as this should be sold as the IMAX release. On the other hand i`m really surprised that people dislike it as it really isnt that bad, its quite seamless.

I do strongly believe though that BD`s are really there to show the directors vision, and as Mark said its what Nolan envisioned and is the best way to display the film. I cant imagine how bad it would look if they letterboxed the IMAX image!!

RE: I Got The Blu-ray Blues...

Same here Chris :/

Dont think you really got my point, great PQ is a bonus but the fact that we get a complete enhanced experiance. Oh well lets just go back to black and white, that will help us focus on the story, as it does get pretty difficult some times!

RE: I Got The Blu-ray Blues...

Well its been awhile since i posted here about our beloved BD! But after reading the last few posts i felt ive got to have my ten pennys worth...

After having experienced BD`s for around 10 months or so now, i feel that i can make this statement without no concern that i may be slightly caught up with the "hype".... Blue Rays are the next `Major` evolutional step in the home cinema experience, and for the first time ever the viewer at home can experience what the director intended when he shot the film. A film isnt merely just a tool to tell a story, it is a visual art form that intends to envoke a reaction, dependent on the desired effect. I.e. mise en scene - defintion here. represents the directors actions/decisions/ideas etc. to make the movie. (anyway ill get to my point as i could go on forever) Where Blu Ray comes in to this argument is that it has only been since HD movies have been released that we have finally been able to see the actual intended vision and sound from our kit at home. Films to reference are 2001 - Was shot on 70mm which when compressed on to DVD lost all the intended detail that was seen at the cinema, but now as the BD are larger enough we can fit the full uncompressed film on to one disc. This is the same with Godfather (which has already been discussed) so i think the problem is peoples misconception of what a BD is! They expect this shiny product that has a shiner picture than a DVD, when in fact what you get for your money is (not in all cases) the best experiance of that particular film. (as was intended!)

Now on a slightly different note i think BD will not take over DVD and that they can both exist alongside one another as BD is the presitge product that really is for the ethusiasts. I can safely say that my mom will never tell the difference, or never care for the benefits as she doesnt simply have an understanding of the medium.

On a last note the last BD i purchased was the effects driven Speed Racer. I really brought it after reading the reviews on the PQ, and didnt expect to be keeping it after i`d watched it just the once. But i got say it blew me away, this film is a must have for any BD collector as it really shows off the format. Well it shows of Picture quality, the disc sucks when it comes down to the lack of HD sound and extras, but i couldnt wait for them to release a better version, and to be honest i dont expect them to due to it flopping at the cinema. But i really cant see why this film got the panning it did as its really not deserved! When you take in to account the original source material, and how this movie has been made i would go as far to say that it has become my fav guilty pleasure movie. (though its shouldnt be a guilty pleasure as its a good film!)

I cant even explain the trip that was the visuals, but i can recommened you try it out!

Next BD is Dark Knight for me, role on Dec 8th (or 9th??) cant wait!!

RE: HMV Instore 2 for 30 Blu Rays

Good spot too. Missed that one as well. But is still a website and they dont have There will be blood.

But the more of these offers popping up the quicker my wages are disappearing!!

Lets just hope they keep including top titles in these campaigns.

RE: HMV Instore 2 for 30 Blu Rays

Have you got a link to that offer on HMV`s website? As looked everywhere and there is no 2 for £25 or 2 for £30 on the website??

The point i was making though was that apart from Asda i havent seen any reasonable prices on Blu Rays in the high street. I purchase all mine from Tower.com or Amazon.co.uk as you get far better value.

But if i can pick them up from a store for the same price then i`m pretty happy!

EDIT - Just found the offer online!! But on closer inspection they havent got the two titles i picked up in the offer!! Dam good offer though considering Transformers is in it. I will have to amend the title of this thread!

Thanks Mark.

RE: Help Needed with Samsung L40A656 and Wii

Yeah i though the same, but fell at the first hurdle when i realised you can only plug one thing at a time. So i cant get the WII to change to to HDTV setting, unless i try getting in to position with the composite, then switching over cables and then pressing the button to change.

Well its worth a try.

Help Needed with Samsung L40A656 and Wii

Im trying to connet my Wii via my Samsung L40A656 with a component cable but i keep getting the message mode not supported on the TV screen!?! Which is odd as the component cable worked fine on my old Samsung LCD.

Has anyone had the same problem? Cant seem to find much on the net.

HMV Instore 2 for 30 Blu Rays

As it says in the title.

Popped in yesterday and picked up There will be blood and Nightmare before xmas for 30 quid. Which i thought was a bargin considering firstly a high street shop was selling Blu rays cheap!! and secondly the cheapest i`d seen Nightmare on Blu was 15.98 on Amazon.

They pretty much had most titles in the offer (Transformers, Zodiac, etc...) and i=the manager said it should be on till after xmas!!

Not available online though.
