Going to buy a BluRay Player next Friday, what should we watch first?

Superted (Elite) posted this on Friday, 9th January 2009, 12:53

As the title says, we are going, are should be going to buy our first BluRay player next friday.

Neither of us have ever seen anything in HD before so wanted to find something that would look jaw droppingly amazing just so I can justify spending the money and hopefully sew the seeds to getting sky HD in the near future!!!

We watch most films together and have most of the pre Christmas big name DVD`s so want something that has been released recently and don`t already have on DVD.

I was thinking of batman, cloverfield or I am legend.

All the best

Gerald.

I personally think the animated ones show off the HD pictures best. e.g. Wall-E, Cars etc.
However, the BBC Planet Earth or March of the Penguins also look phenomenal.

I`d go for a film you know very well, as you`ll be able to see the improvement over previous versions. Having said that, WALL-E looks amazing, as do most animated features. I don`t own Baraka, but I hear that`s reference quality stuff. I Am Legend is also supposed to be reference, Crystal Skull is great, as are Iron Man, Clone Wars, Enchanted, Resident Evil: Extinction, 300, Transformers and Blade Runner. There are loads more obviously, but those spring to mind.

Avoid Crystal Skull purely for the terribleness that is the plot and the appalling acting

You want Jaw Dropping my advice would be to go for Speed Racer, i was struck dumb by how amazing it looks on Blu Ray

He asked for good looking films, not movie critique - I`m sure he can make up his own mind ;) I`m surprised you didn`t single out Resident Evil, as that`s surely be a more worthy candidate for terribleness (unfortunately it just happens to look amazing).

I second the Speed Racer recommendation! Its a great movie, and the PQ is amazing!!

or

My other recommendation would be for the Dark Knight, as the Imax scenes are breathtaking!

I realise the quality of the movie isnt the same as the quality of the image but why put anyone through a bad movie when theres no need :)

While not `eye-poppingly` amazing, the Godfather films look better than ever on BD. Close Encounters is another older film that looks great. I still have a lot of stuff that I haven`t watch from Christmas, such as the Matrix films (but I know they look great from the HD DVD versions), both Kill Bills and some older titles like The Lost Boys and The Goonies.

Oh, what BD player are you thinking of buying?

In terms of picture quality, Baraka, Speed Racer and any Pixar release all look fantastic. It depends on whether you want to test out your system or sit down and watch a film. If it`s the former, then I`d go with Baraka as Speed Racer only has SD sound (not a problem if you haven`t got an HD amp) but to sit around and watch a film with excellent sound and picture quality then Ratatouille, Cars and WALL-E are hard to beat - the latter has a superlative picture. To show what an old film can look like, 2001 is from 70mm stock, has a fantastic transfer and looks great - a real step up from DVD.
