RE: Criminal Cropping...

Makes sense I suppose. Thanks for the reply.

RE: Are R2 films better quality than R1?

3:2 pulldown is an integral part of NTSC playback. All players that produce NTSC perform it, not just prog scan machines.

I believe Neon was saying that `jerkiness` was a problem on `normal` NTSC, and wasn`t commenting on prog scan`s performance.

Criminal Cropping...

Was watching `See No Evil Hear No Evil` last night (my wife likes it & I got it cheap, honest) and I felt something was missing. On the box it said `Anamorphic Widescreen, Preserving the original aspect ratio..` etc. etc. Well, it was an anamorphic widescreen picture, BUT...

... the deceiving expetives appear to have used a pan`n`scam master and then chopped off the top and bottom of this to give a `widescreen` picture. I know that Eastern Heros have done this for their cheapo Jackie Chan DVD`s, but I didn`t expect it from a company like Columbia Tristar. If they only had a pan`n`scam master, then well the hell didn`t they just produce a pan`n`scam DVD? Pan`n`scam is bad enough, but cropped pan`n`scam!!!! It`s criminal. Thats only about 56% of the original image by reckoning!

Is this common practice? Any other titles received this sort of treatment?

RE: Any opinions on Sony DVP-NS300/400?

I`ve got the NS-300 & have been very satisfied with it (even though I got it last year when it was costing £200+ R2 only). NS-300 doesn`t have CD-R/RW playback though - I believe NS-400 does.

RE: Would you buy a DVD that was non-anamorphic ?

Only if I really want the film and it`s unlikely that an anamorphic version will be released in the near future i.e. The Abyss. I have 3 such films in my collection so far (from about 80).
I recently found out that one of them however is anamorphic for Region 1 (Jackie Chan 1st Strike), so I reckon its about time I got my Sony chipped!

RE: Where`s Armageddon gone at HMV 2 for 20

It was, cos i got it. Maybe they`ve run out.

RE:

It won`t. Sony`s need chipping.

RE: To Toshiba 210 or To Sony 400 That is the Question. Whether tis nobler in the mind etc. etc.

I asked myself a similar question a few months ago, eventually plumped for a Sony (NS 300 in my case) purely becasue I have a Sony TV, and the DVD`s remote controls all necessary TV functions as well.

Other than that, they are both damn fine players.

RE: Laminate Flooring in new house

Unless you`re laying onto a concrete ground floor, all you need is the underlay. Also make sure the boards you`re laying onto are nice and flat.

RE: Tesco.com - anyone awaiting DVDs from them?

Ordered five DVD`s thursday, received them yesterday (tuesday), all in one package as requested. They didn`t send me any email to say they`d been despatched though.

RE: Is R2 Gladiator faulty?

Just recently got Gladiator in HMV bogof sale - can`t say I noticed the deleted scenes/trailers being particularly dodgy. Certainly no `vertical lines`.

RE: Is Gladiator better than Spartacus

I thought Gladiator was excellent, and I`ve always thought Spartacus were great. If I had to choose one over t`other, I`d probably go for Spartacus as its more thought provoking.

Ben Hur is even better.

RE: Help Major Widescreen Problem

I have a 32" Sony, and before I tweaked the geometry using the service menu I was losing over an inch of picture on the left, but only a little bit on the right.

I posted a link to a site that tells you how to access Sony service menus a while back - try searching this forum for `service menu` or `engineering menu`.

RE: VAT FREE DVD`s - cheaper than Play247.com !!!

Just ordered 5 DVD`s. You have to specify that you want to receive them as a single delivery. They have emailed me to confirm the total charge (£67.24). I agree with sparkster, if they then split the order and charge multiple p&p they are contravening the agreement.

RE: How many DVDs has everyone here got?

First DVD bought end of July 2001, I`ve now got 32 plus 3 on order.

RE: sony kv32ws2u specification

I`ve got one - it`s 50hz, and yes it does auto-switch quite successfully. I`m quite happy with it (especially now i`ve tweaked the picture geometry using the service menu). It`s not a truly flat screen though, if you`re into that sort of thing.

RE: Sony TV engineering menu

The 2 methods of getting into the service menu mentioned at kv32tweak don`t work for my set (it`s not a WEGA unfortunately), but I have eventually managed to find a site that has the secret.

For anyone whose interested, try http://members.accessus.net/~090/awh/sonypal.html

At last I can see the whole picture!

RE: sony dav 300 will it play cdr`s..??

The only way to make anything SONY region free is to chip it (as far as I know)

Sony TV engineering menu

Does anyone know where I can find info on accessing the engineering menus for Sony TV`s?

p.s I`ve tried searching on northernlight.com as suggested in FAQ.

p.p.s mines a KV-32WS2U

RE: Does anyone have Tremors 3?

I thought Tremors 2 was OK - maybe I`m easily pleased. Never seen 3 though. Is Tremors 3 region 1 only at the moment? Haven`t seen it region 2.

RE: Alien Legacy £29.99, Nightmare on Elm Street Box Set £25

Only saw this post Wednesday, first chance I had to get to a woolies (Dorking) was today - wasn`t very hopeful but they had 1 Alien Legacy left.

£29.99 bargain!
