Is R2 Gladiator faulty?

jonno (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 13th November 2001, 22:47

I bought a copy of R2 Gladiator (2 Disc) at HMV a while back and have noticed that the deleted scenes on Disc 2 have a poor quality picture when compared to the actual film on Disc 1. There seems to be vertical lines through all the deleted scenes as well as the trailers. Have I got a faulty disc or is this a problem that others have encountered?

Cheers

Jonno

Rented Deep Blue Sea a while ago and the picture was top notch, but on deleted scences they looked like a poor quality VCD , I figured that because they are not to be used they dont bother processing them right ie colour balance ect why waste the time and the money , but on other titels the deleted scences are top quality, could depend on what part of the film makeing they get to before they decide to delete certain scences....I think some of Jaws deleted scences are a bit crappy as well!

I will look at Gladiator tommorow and see!

Just recently got Gladiator in HMV bogof sale - can`t say I noticed the deleted scenes/trailers being particularly dodgy. Certainly no `vertical lines`.

Hi folks,

A lot of the time these extra or deleted scenes are just rough cuts taken from the original edit. If the film was cut on a digital edit suite like Avid then this is usually done at a fairly low picture resolution (or highly compressed so they can access hours of rushes without taking up too much hard drive space). The sound will often only be rough production quality (not mixed or EQ`d) so you shouldn`t always expect a polished final product.

In the case of Deep Blue Sea this is definately the case - you can see the very blocky picture which does look like badly compressed VCD. The extra scenes were probably just taken from an Avid rough cut done at an early stage in the editing process.

Hope this clears it up a bit.
