Blandings -6:30 Sundays

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Tuesday, 8th January 2013, 18:10

Timothy Spall, Jennifer Saunders and Mark Williams star in PG Wodehouse`s Blandings Castle stories. 6x30 minute episodes.

I`ve been suffering withdrawal symptoms ever since Fry and Laurie stopped being Jeeves and Wooster in the 90s. Blandings Castle is the location for the comings and goings of the aristocratic Threepwood family, led by Clarence the 9th Earl. All he wants is a quiet life tending his prize pig, the Empress of Blandings but he has to contend with his ferocious sister Constance, dim nephew Freddie and a variety of peculiar characters who regularly freeload at Blandings Castle.

I`m old enough to remember enjoying Ian Carmichael and Dennis Price in the roles.

Ta for the alert though it`s always interesting to see someone else have a go at Wodehouse.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

I have very dim recollections of the Carmichael and Price Woosters, of which only one survives. At the same time there was a Blandings series of which only a few clips survive, starring Ralph Richardson and Stanley Holloway as Beach.

Well I quite enjoyed that.
Stand out performances from Timothy Spall and Jack Farthing.
As long as you can supress the urge to look round every corner for Bertram and Jeeves it`s a definite fixture on the Sky+.

I`ve never found Wodehouse to be laugh out loud anyway.
Still really enjoy it though.

As a Wodehouse aficionado, I have to say the first two episodes so far have been bloody awful compared to the originals. It`s a way of passing half-an-hour, but it could be so so much better.
