Summer transfer/rumour thread

Thought I`d start this up rather than having a purely Aidan McGeady thread, but thought it would be of interest that Spartak apparently offered £8.3million last week which was rejected.

In the past I thought the £10/12 million I believe mbilko thought was a bit inflated and was more of an "asking price" and he`d go for like £6/7million.

I think a few others ridiculed that he`d be worth more than £5million coming from the SPL (could be wrong here)

From Sky Sports

New Celtic manager Neil Lennon insists it would take a `ridiculous` amount of money to tempt the club into selling Aiden McGeady.
Quote:
The 24-year-old was the subject of an £8.3million offer from Spartak Moscow last week but Lennon pointed out that it would take a much bigger offer for Celtic to even think about selling their prize-asset
Quote:
Birmingham were reportedly interested in bringing the winger to the Premier League in January but it remains to be seen whether they will test Celtic`s financial resolve this summer

I don`t think there is any chance whatsoever of Torres to Barcelona.  To Real Madrid would be more likely.

Babel may also fancy his chances of staying now if a new boss is on the way in.  I reckon he`ll opt to stay (depedent on what a new manager says obviously) or at least go to a team in Europe in some form.

Are we okay to add Dirk Benedict`s son to Manchester City yet?

I think there is a difference though between saying he isnt worth more than £5/6/7m and he won`t be sold for more than £5/6/7m

It is apparent here that Celtic / Lennon are saying we dont want to sell [unless you bid silly money] that being so it is unlikley that he wont be sold for less than £10m

I still retain that he won`t actually be worth that money but as I say being worth it and fetching it are two different scenarios

As for the Liverpool thing - Mascherano and Kuyt are believed to be being targeted by Benitez / Inter for around £35m
For me I can see them going. Its good business as a small profit will be obtained (and id argue the market was inflated more when we bought them than it is now)
If that money is obtained and used wisely then I dont think Torres or Gerrard would need to be sold
Whether not having a need to sell Gerrard would stop him forcing an exit of his own desire is a different issue

I`ll still maintain that if the right manager comes in Babel shouldnt be sold (others similar also) and should be given a chance as I believe they have more to offer and could be decent players given right handling / encouraging / use

I understand that as could be applied to pretty much all transfers in past few years in fairness, but I don`t anyone would have thought clubs would actually pay £9million odd at the time either.

I`m not convinced 100% the market is any less inflated now.

To bring in replacements for them you`re looking at a new holding midfielder plus a right winger.

Ie. If you wanted to buy Milner you are looking at £30million.  Yaya Toure £25million.  Gourcuff £25million (not a holding midfielder or right winger but just example).

Unless Lucas steps up I reckon you`d struggle to get like for like replacements for less money, unless you make big gambles on untested players.

Right winger - Babel, Maxi, Benayoun and there must be youth/reserve players too.

Holding midfield - Lucas, possibly reserve/youth. Who says new manager wants one. Could try Gerrard and Aquilani in middle.
I am certain there are decent holding midfielders out there that dont break the bank (Chelsea didnt pay mega bucks for Makele did they?)

Also I dont think Yaya Toure will cost £25m unless your name is Man City. He`s out of favour and wants to leave (as far as I can tell) so where is Barca`s position to hold out for so much?

As for Torres - You can argue he wont go Madrid due to Atletico connection. You can argue Barca dont need him and having already spent big on Villa this year and not having the Real Madrid bank supporting them it is questionable whether they`d have a real inteerst as well

That`s why I said he`s more likely to go to Real, purely as you can`t rule them out. I don`t think it`s likely, but more likely than Barca.

Pretty sure Barca won`t be bidding as they have Villa, Ibrahimovich, Messi.  Are making a big play for Fabregas and have said they don`t have the money in the bank to increase that past £30million (which they will), but don`t see why they would be going out of their way from another striker either.

Iniesta, Pedro and Bojan all play in the upfront positions also (this is rumoured to be how Fabregas would fit in, Iniesta would play in the wing role more, as he did it a few times last season).

Makelele cost Chelsea £16.6million and that was 7years ago now and was actually pretty much their biggest signing (Duff and Crespo cost around the same of £17million).

Don`t get me wrong I agree with there is players there, but I think a new manager might find himself under pressure if two "fan favourites" (as I know people who don`t like and those that do) go and effective replacements aren`t bought.  Also didn`t Torres say you need 3/4world class players, so don`t think he`d be too happy selling 2 first teamers if "big" players aren`t brought in as replacements or to fill other positions/

It will probably depend on the manager that comes in thought and the system they are planning to use, which could convince that position is not needed.

The flipside is if a manager isn`t appointed and they are sold anyway, who decides on the players to come in? Could end up "sitting on the warchest" until new manager is sorted and all the best players/ potential bargains have gone.
