Technically the team never told Massa to get out the way and therefore technically they didnt break the rule
Of course we all know that the message that went to Massa was him being told to get out the way - we`re not that stupid.
Of course despite Massa saying it was his decision to get out the way his demeanour, press conference comments and desire to get off the podium following the after presentation photos tell a different story - again we`re not that stupid
But why are people so surprised, if you have two drivers and one can win the title and one can`t do you think this doesnt happen all the time?
The reason McLaren and Red Bull could race each other is that either driver can win the title - for Ferrari that is highly unlikley to happen and so are giving their "team" as a whole a better chance of winning it
Don;t get me wrong, I think it stinks and all drivers should race to the end and if they lose the race it should be because they made a mistake / were too slow / got overtaken by a better driver on the day and not because of politics
But thats the nature of the beast as it stands, you`ve subscribed to it for years so why stop now?

As mentioned before, Liverpool allegedly gave Cole a very large signing on fee
You seem to be the one anywhere harping on about this. Ive heard the £90k a week in many places but not a massive signing on fee (note im not saying there isnt one here but you seem adamant he`s had like, i don`t know, £8m off them or something - which i`m sorry i simply do not think that adds up)
Quote:
Let`s not kid ourselves. Liverpool offered Cole the most money
Sure maybe money did play its part BUT of course it couldnt possibly have had anything to do with
(a) getting away from London for a change
or
(b) he sees Liverpool as a bigger better club
or
(c) maybe he thinks Liverpool have a better future than Spurs
or
(d) He feels he is more likely to get more playing time at Liverpool
or
(e) He feels he get played in a position he wants to play in at Liverpool that he may not have done elsewhere
or
(f) any combination of the above
Of course none of these could be a possibility I suppose, its all about the money and to hell with any other equally rational reasoning

This for a player who Mourinho, Ancelotti and Capello rate as not good enough to be a first team pick, only being used as an option.
I thought Cole played a lot under Mourinho
(EDIT : Mourinho was there June 2004 - Sept 2007. In seasons 04/05 to 06/07 Cole played a total of 113 games (46,46,21) and it appears he was injured in the last season - so i dont think he wasnt a first team pick under mourinho)
Wasn`t he injured for a portion of the start of Ancelotti`s reign? (Injured from Jan 09 - last week of Sept 09)
Capello - for long time can`t select him due to injury and given some of his decisions in the last world cup I dont know how you can really bring Capello into any debate over the ability of a player based on a manager`s selection policy - afterall this is a guy who at 3-1 down to Germany needing goals opted to bring on Emile Heskey!!!!!!!!
Latest rumour is we are going after Wayne Bridge

RE: The official Liverpool 10/11 Season Thread
Joe Cole is a better player than "no final ball" Lennon
Modric I rate, but has he done more than Joe Cole in his career? I`d say not
If he moved away from Spurs would he get 75/80/90k per week - very possibly
Bale - looks like he could be good, but he`s had 1 good year, maybe even half a good year. I dont think he`s ready to hold a torch to someone with 3 league titles and numerous other trophies in the locker
Remember Cole was turned into a more defensive left midfielder by Mourinho and thus took away hugely from his natural game and ability. He was a good player at Chelsea playing in a fashion that was not suited to his natural game - hopefully he gets to play in a role more suiting to his skills under Hodgson and takes that chance to show himself fully (i appreciate there are a few big ifs there!!)
Personally, if anyone had said to me that effectively we would get Joe Cole and $5m for Youssi Benayoun i`d have jumped at the chance - infact i`d defy just about every team in the world to turn that down
I dont think many Utd fans would have not been happy with him turning up on a free trf. The same goes for Arsenal and Man City. I think Chelsea fans would have been happy for him to stay - all that being so I dont see why Spurs would be above him
And all thats coming from someone, who despite misgivings about Benayoun from the start, freely admits he was probably our best player last year and at one stage this summer I hoped he wouldnt be sold to Chelsea

RE: The official Liverpool 10/11 Season Thread
In this day and age how the hell do you have £90k per week for Joe Cole as OTT??
Thats £40k less than Lampard and Terry
Thats probably similarly lower than Gerrard and Torres
Thats probably similarly lower than Rooney and Ferdinand
If reports are to be believed thats £30k less than Gareth Barry and £130k less than Yaya Toure
I also doubt that £90k per week is a pay rise from his Chelsea contract so, if thats right, he`s not even taking mroe out of the game (like you suggest)
Wonder how much you will pay Raul if this morning`s rumours are correct? Can you see him coming for the reduced salary of £60k per week?
I thought you wanted the Spurs management to up the wage structure when you lost Berbatov (given he was on what, £30k per week ish when he left?)

Would it not make more sense to actually try be the adult here and go next door (not at night when they are p***ed up and partying) and simply talk to them about it and explain the issue.
Calmly do this and ask that they try and take into consideration the people living around them
Shouting over the fence at midnight when they`ve been on the beer for 6 hours is really not the way to tackle this (which from your post seems to be the only thing you are likely to have done so far)
Immediately calling the police/agents etc etc really isnt going to win you any favour either.
Obviously if the polite face to face requests fall on deaf ears then go to the letting agent and ask that they speak to them
If it still continues then get the landlords number and tell him you have spoken to the occupants, spoken to the letting agents and neither have done a thing and that if he doesnt you`ll go over his head too

The club have stated since Strachan was in charge that Birmingham`s rumoured £10m bid for the player would be unsuccessful and nothing has changed in the last 18 months. Facts are - he is under contract, has not asked for a transfer and the club don`t need to sell. Remember the debts are almost no existent.
1) Again that`s fine. But how much a club want for him and how much he is actually really worth are, IMO at least, 2 different things.
I mean just because Man City will have to pay double price for any player because everyone knows they have a billionaire owner doesnt mean the players are really worth that
2) Debts are almost non existent?
I cant find a set of 2009 accounts but your 2008 accounts show you have short term liabiltiies of £28m and long term liabilities of £15.8m - total debts of nearly £44m
Your balance sheet shows Net Assets but does not show no, or virtually non existent, debts

RE: Summer transfer/rumour thread
Right winger - Babel, Maxi, Benayoun and there must be youth/reserve players too.
Holding midfield - Lucas, possibly reserve/youth. Who says new manager wants one. Could try Gerrard and Aquilani in middle.
I am certain there are decent holding midfielders out there that dont break the bank (Chelsea didnt pay mega bucks for Makele did they?)
Also I dont think Yaya Toure will cost £25m unless your name is Man City. He`s out of favour and wants to leave (as far as I can tell) so where is Barca`s position to hold out for so much?
As for Torres - You can argue he wont go Madrid due to Atletico connection. You can argue Barca dont need him and having already spent big on Villa this year and not having the Real Madrid bank supporting them it is questionable whether they`d have a real inteerst as well

Thought I`d start this up rather than having a purely Aidan McGeady thread, but thought it would be of interest that Spartak apparently offered £8.3million last week which was rejected.
In the past I thought the £10/12 million I believe mbilko thought was a bit inflated and was more of an "asking price" and he`d go for like £6/7million.
I think a few others ridiculed that he`d be worth more than £5million coming from the SPL (could be wrong here)
I think there is a difference though between saying he isnt worth more than £5/6/7m and he won`t be sold for more than £5/6/7m
It is apparent here that Celtic / Lennon are saying we dont want to sell [unless you bid silly money] that being so it is unlikley that he wont be sold for less than £10m
I still retain that he won`t actually be worth that money but as I say being worth it and fetching it are two different scenarios
As for the Liverpool thing - Mascherano and Kuyt are believed to be being targeted by Benitez / Inter for around £35m
For me I can see them going. Its good business as a small profit will be obtained (and id argue the market was inflated more when we bought them than it is now)
If that money is obtained and used wisely then I dont think Torres or Gerrard would need to be sold
Whether not having a need to sell Gerrard would stop him forcing an exit of his own desire is a different issue
I`ll still maintain that if the right manager comes in Babel shouldnt be sold (others similar also) and should be given a chance as I believe they have more to offer and could be decent players given right handling / encouraging / use

You`ve got to be kidding?
Over the last 6 years or so i`d say he`s been one of England`s better players.
He`s about the only one who consistantly takes on players and asks questions of defenders.
He also adds some proper shape to the England team
He regularly chipped in with goals for Chelsea and again I dont think he`s been that inconsistent for them (you have to remember this season he had the end of the injury and then was in and out of the team under Ancelotti which is hardly key for performing well - see Ryan Babel and most other Liverpool players under Benitez)
I`ll be shocked if he doesnt start and I think he could be a key player for us

he wanted 100 not sure what clubs would pay that much, Spurs would, is that not above Arsenals wage cap? Not sure Utd would fork out that much p/w for him. Although the free transfer could tempt more clubs to part with a higher wage.
I was of the opinion that Spurs stuck to a fairly rigid salary structure also - and that £100k would not fall into that structure
I would have liked him at Liverpool years ago, still would, but last year probably blew us out of the running (unless we get a manager quickly who can sweet talk him lol)
Quote:
Hope Utd get him, but got a feeling could be City, Arsenal or Liverpool (Liverpool being the least likely in my opinion, because of manager change and the £120,000wages required).
Thought I heard the other day that the Pool had the 2nd or 3rd highest wage bill in the league

RE: Liverpool negotiating Rafa`s departure according to Sky Sports news
I dont think many fans expectations are unrealistic. Its not like we all expected to have won the league every year for the past 3 years or that we expect someone to come in and win the league every year for the next 5 years either
To say we should "see top 4 as beyond us" at this moment in time is for me the wrong approach
We`ve only just fallen out of it and I dont personally believe the 3 teams above us are that much better than us - if we play right
That being so I think the manager we bring in should be seen as someone who can get things moving immediately - and by that I mean challenge for 4th not the title.
The bulk of the players who you believe fluked 2nd (and I think thats wrong too but thats my opinion) are still at the club so there`s no reason they still shouldnt be beating the teams around us
IF next season (or season after) it doesnt pan out that we get 4th back (or better) then i`d agree stock will need to be taken and a lengthy re-build process will be needed.
To get to that point after one year and with no fight would IMO be scandalous and short changing the fans

To be honest i think we`re going to struggle for a few seasons (more so than we have been) and better get used to the Europa League, especially if the likes of Torres, Gerrard and Mascherano go cause theres no money to replace them like for like and the transfer funds will get swallowed up by the debt.
SGE would be ok, but would he be happy with no budget and he does bring a ton of baggage wherever he goes. Kenny was ok if temp in the middle of the season but hes not the answer now i dont believe.
Hodgson again would be good, look what he did with Fulham, but hes not a long term replacement due to his age, give him the job for two years and then see whats what i reckon.
1) I still argue that technically the debt (and this goes for United too) is not on the club, the club are used as security on loans and to fund the debt (ie pay the interest on the loans)
2) SGE - I did not like him when he managed England. However, he always gets players to like him which, i guess, may see the best come out of players like Babel (for 1 example) provided they are played correctly. I still dont really want him though
3) Hodgson "would be good" - isnt that pretty much solely based on some half decent players at Fulham busting a gut and having 1 good year - and by good year I mean achieving a league position that the squad should be aiming for and having a great Euro run
I think your analysis perfectly sums up the fact that many wanted him out but failed to consider whether the other options really would be better
This was always my fear when I considered the idea of getting rid of him. It was a major reason why I stressed we couldnt really do it earlier in the season.
I`m not saying that the decision to get rid is wrong - I do however fear those who wanted him out so badly maybe didnt see the problem with him going and will quickly be whinging about his replacement lol
