[ET NEWS] Samsung Electronics has recently stopped producing and selling digital cameras, hinting at the Korean tech giant’s departure from the waning market, industry sources said on April 7.

“We no longer produce and sell digital cameras,” said a Samsung official on condition of anonymity. “But we will create a new camera product category to continue the business.”

I still have and love my Pentax K20D (even though I now also mainly use my K3 II) which has a CMOS sensor co-developed by Samsung who released an identical version of this camera under their own name (just with different firmware).

Have to admit that I get as good a picture with a cheapo digital camera for holiday pics, and do not have to worry about damage or theft.

The big advantage nowadays, is that you can take hundreds of photos and cut them down to the good ten, that don't have your thumb over the lens.

I guess the market has changed lots over the years, I'm old fashioned ;) when I go out where I think there will be photo ops I take a compact digital, and phone, a lot of ppl are happy with their mobile for photos, although if mine wasn't so cheap maybe I would be ;)

Also though, you see a lot more ppl with DSLRs, even at parties the kids go to or at the park, I'm the only one using a compact camera.

As I say, old fashioned, different tool for each job. I still use an mp3 player as well, but not very often I leave the house with all 3 :)

Yes it's sad but it seems stand-alone cameras are going the way of the dodo. Even dslr sales are on the decline. I lazily use my phone for most snaps because it's so convenient that pics automatically get uploaded.
