Audacity with microphone

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Sunday, 5th April 2020, 15:15

I've bough a Trust GXT 232 microphone which I'm using with Audacity.

I'm having problems getting any sound level at all which doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem when I Google it but all the answers seem to apply to things that are already set correctly.
Anyone have any sound background to offer a few pointers.

have you checked the mic works as expected with windows sound recorder?

i haven't used audacity in a while, used it to record some vinyl to mp3, took a bit of tinkering/following online guides.

Audacity seems to be one of those programs, it's great, if you know what you're doing.

It's a fair point that it may not be Audacity.

Go into windows sound settings and and although it appears as the microphone option try 'Test Microphone' and even just 4 inches from it with a raised voice it barely registers.

does your pc have a mic, and headphone socket? Some these days come with one socket, which is used as both i.e. it's only designed to be used with a headset which uses one jack for both sound and mic. (confused me on a work laptop when i plugged in my old headset, and couldn't work out where I plugged in the mic lead!)

I'm not in windows at the moment, but isn't there a mic boost setting in the mic control panel?

i'll be at a windows pc tomorrow so can have look and fiddle :)

There is a mic socket on the PC (3.5mm jack) but the mic purchased only has a USB lead which all shows up and works fine just damn all volume.
No Mic boost just a straight forward volume slider.

EDIT: After a bit more of a play by cranking everything available up to max I'm getting a just about acceptable level on voice but it means everything else is up as well ie: background hiss.
That's in Audacity still barely registers on the 'Test your mic' in sound settings.

I use audacity. You need to ensure line-in is not disabled.

Go to search programs box (bottom left) at windows start Icon, put in 'sound card', click 'change sound card settings', and the display below will come up, press recording tab, right click to see and tick box to see hidden devices, line-in is usually a hidden device, grrrh!, stupid windows, then you enable line in, and audacity works with sound in. You may have to adjust the stereo sound volumes L and R on the Audacity screen to suit your microphone.

If you can find what mysterious place Microsoft hid it in, your driver might have an option called "dB boost" which increases the gain of the microphone. It could also have mute on (which for many mics doesn't completely mute it).

I've been through every setting I can get access to but the driver is the Win 10 generic USB one and states it's the latest/best available when I try to update it.
I'll keep looking but I think it's a case of everything up to max and filter out background hiss etc as a post production process.
Either that or a different mic via the 3.5mm jack.

Reluctant to do that as I just bought it to try recording my fast fiction with a view to dipping a toe in the podcast world. I need to have a listen first just to see if my toes don't curl too much at the sound of my own voice.

Maybe you could ask the helpdesk, they might know, it doesn't sound like you are doing anything obviously wrong:

Hi Snaps,

Have you tried another DAW - Reaper has a free version. You could try this to see if you have the same issue?

I'd also suggest downloading ASIO4ALL which is a good low latency USB driver.
