Finally bit the bullet and uninstalled Avast, after years of procrastinating. Having issues with my web browser finally convinced me. After a few hours open, I'd get lag typing in these web dialogs, and the laptop would get gradually slower and more stressed, the longer I had the browser open. And other minor issues.
Switched to Windows Defender this morning, and hours later, I see no change in the laptop behaviour (much less lag typing in this box right now), and looking at Task Manager, my CPU usage dropped about 20% and freed up a wodge of system RAM.
I seriously thought my laptop was getting old and was heading for replacement time!
