Suggestions for a new desktop PC please.

Jitendar Canth (Reviewer) posted this on Thursday, 19th June 2014, 10:30

My laptop is having issues that I can't fix, and I can see myself needing a new PC.

I'd like a desktop with comprehensible and accessible innards, just a cheap multimedia machine. The most that I'd need it to do is stream 1080p video. Primary use would be wordprocessing, surfing, playing DVDs, streaming online video and mp3 playback. Maybe in the future I'd plug in a BD drive

I'd need a screen too. I want cheap and reliable.

if you're not going to play games then many of the cheaper PCs that pop up on hotukdeals may fulfil your needs, especially the Zoostorm ones that eBuyer do.

although saying that, quite often those cases are quite small, so maybe you'd be better off using some-one like Novatech, where you could upgrade the case, or buy a barebones bundle, and choose the case etc you want.

there's always Dell outlet to consider as well, some real bargains can be had there, and if you get a workstation such as the Vostro range you have room in the case, unlike the SFF dimensions.

When I built mine, I mainly used Novatech and Scan.co.uk for the components, but they also sell pre-assembled rigs.

If you're not going to be doing any serious gaming, then a quite basic rig should suit you fine. I'm not entirely sure of you'd need a hardcore GFX card for BD playback, as most integrated graphics chips these days are more than up to the task

Here's a fairly simple rig (without an O/S) for £280

I was looking earlier at this...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B006ZINMP6/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0T36GZQXR2SKCC0MY6N5&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=455344027&pf_rd_i=468294#productDetails&tag=myrev09-21

Though it's probably more than I really need.

Is Amazon a good idea, or should I try a speciality PC site instead?

Strange I think they've had the same machine at the same price for a good 18 months now.
Are prices that stable now?

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

I bought a budget box from here:

http://www.palicomp.co.uk/

Communication with company ok, it works ok, no problems. They did try to sell a few upgrades (phone order), but didn't go for a hard sell.

Might be worth a look.

a bsic PC like  a Zoostorm doesn't matter ebuyer of amazon, a guy at work bought one from Amazon recently, he's happy with it.

as for checking the price try camelcamelgo, maybe processor has stayed teh same but they've upped the ram, or HD over time?

I think palcomp is one of those pc shops that has been around for as long as I can remember!

Wound up figuring out what the problem with the laptop was, so the immediate need for a new machine has receded.

But as I was suddenly reminded of this laptop's shortcomings while troubleshooting it, I'll probably get a desktop sooner rather than later. Thanks for your advice everyone, and I'll keep it in mind.
