Google Drive and cloud storage

alfie noakes (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 25th April 2012, 09:23

I assume that those who care about such things will already be aware that Google has launched it`s much anticipated cloud storage service.

I`m a bit of a cloud storage fan and already pay for extra storage for Picasa. I also use Dropbox, SugarSync and SkyDrive (Microsoft`s cloud service).

Any road up; I noticed that SkyDrive are dropping their generous free 25gb limit to 7gb. However, if you are quick you can opt-in to continue to get the 25gb free. I suspect that you have to already be a SkyDrive user to do this. If you signed up as a new user, you`d probably get the 7gb limit but it might be worth a punt. Get on it if you need it!

Ooh I didn`t know that MS where offering 25gb free, took me a short while to find where to upgrade my 5gb.

Thanks for the heads up!

I`ve been using ADrive for a few months and it seems to be good. 50GB for free users with a 2GB file size limit - more than enough for my needs.

One thing about all these cloud services which I can`t seem to find many answers to, is privacy. I assume all of them encrypt the data at their end, but how many of them do so in a way that prevents over eager employees or government snoopers from having a nosey anytime they feel like?

This comparison of the main rivals seems to indicate that they do encrypt your files.

Only just started using cloud storage.
Dropbox is so easy it`s ridiculous but 2GB isn`t a large allowance. As I`m using it mainly for written work it`s not a problem yet.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

You can boost your dropbox allowance by being a beta tester for uploading images from a camera or smartphone. Your allowance goes up by however much you upload. Managed to get my allowance up to 7.5gb when they first did this coupla months ago (took an age though). You can then just delete the photos and use your shiny new allowance for anything.

Now says you can get 3gb extra:
