Nostalga - Trying to remember old 8 bit computers

RJS (undefined) posted this on Saturday, 27th February 2010, 22:36

This is bugging me, hoping someone can help me remember. Back in the 80s I had a Spectrum, friends of mine had Ataris, C64s, Acorns and Amstrads, but there were other models I`d always see on display in the likes of WH Smiths.

But I can`t remember what they were. :( I know the Oric 1 was one of them, however one used to have basic commands like "Zap" for sound effects. Not sure if that was the Oric or another one.

Can anyone remember?

ZX81, ZX Spectrum, Sinclair QL, Atari ST - that was my digital evolution.

I don`t need one of those Brain Training games.
Mine can already roll over and play dead.

Could you be htinking of MSX where MSX was a "standard" and sifferent companies made them?

I had an Amstrad CPC6128 (Actually I still do it`s in my parents` loft along with a Philips G7000, you could be thinking of that but I doubt it!)

mates had ZX Spectrums, Commodore 64s, 1 had a Vic 20.

Dragons and MSXs I vaguely remember seeing in shops, but never knew anyone who had them.

Same as mine but I skipped the QL (The ST1040 is still in the loft)
Don`t suppose you were on Micronet back then were you?

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Nascom 2 (about 3000 hand soldered joints), ZX Spectrum, BBC Model B, Atari ST, Commodore Amiga 1000, Amstrad CPC 464 and CPC 6128, Atari Portfolio, Psion MC400 and Psion Series 7. Since then it has all been x86 based and all the fun has gone. However I am awaiting delivery of a Zipit Z2 and that should be a bit of fun.

Coincidenatlly I was telling my girls that in 1980 I bought, and assembled a 16KB memory extension board for the Nascom - yes that is 16 KILObytes, cost me £178. For comparison I was holding a couple of 8GB microSD cards that cost me £20!

£11,392 per MB then vs £0.00125 now. That is 9,113,600:1 ignoring the decreased value of £. The board would have been about 8" x 8" so to complete this boring fact fest, enough boards for 16GB would cover more than 10 acres.

I thought £120 for my 512KB Amiga expansion was bad.

I have a C64 sitting in boxes with a load of games in my living room. Just need to get the time to get the part to fix it.
