Thinking of buying an Epson R200? DON`T!!

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Sunday, 6th February 2005, 19:09

I`ve just bought one of these printers because according to the blurb you can print directly on to printable DVDs or CDs with them. In practice you can`t. Or at least I can`t. I`ve tried a couple of dozen times to get a disc to print, but all it does is spit the tray back out at me after grinding away at the leading edge for about thirty seconds. It prints nicely when given conventional paper through the rear media hopper, but it just doesn`t want to know the CD tray.

I`ve checked around a number of sites and there does seem to be an issue about the loading tray eventually losing the ability for the platen to catch hold of it, but nobody has mentioned the printer simply refusing to load the tray from day one.

When I load the tray in, the leading edge which has a clear plastic strip intended to get caught between the platen roller and the pinch rollers, simply jams up against the pinch rollers and refuses to be drawn further. The plastic is now heavily scratched by the friction. I`m waiting to hear what Epson have to say about the matter but as their support website doesn`t mention the loading tray at all and the online help and electronic manual are similarly unhelpful I`m not very hopeful. >:(

Then Tigger looked up at the ceiling, and closed his eyes,
and his tongue went round and round his chops, in case he had left any outside,
and a peaceful smile came over his face as he said, "So that`s what Tiggers like!"
Which explains why he always lived at Kanga`s house afterwards,
and had Extract of Malt for breakfast, dinner and tea.

I`ve printed dozens of discs on my R300 with no problems. Sounds like you`ve got a duffer there - I`d return it.

I got the R300 a couple of weeks ago and I reckon it`s the dogs bo**ocks. Prints all media that I have tried so far, paper, photos and CD`s/DVD`s. To date I`ve never had a problem and the quality is superb :)

tbh the r200/r300 are the same printer apart from the card reader built into the r300, so that shouldn`t be the issue, i reckon you got either a dodgy printer (damaged/dropped etc) or a faulty cd/dvd tray, as, if there is a week link with these models then that tray is definitely it :( but as the testimonials above state, generally speaking it is a brilliant printer, certainly the best epson i`ve ever had & easily on a par with the hp`s i`ve owned (carts are far to expensive for the hp`s)

oh, & don`t pay more than £8.99p for a full set of carts for the r300/r200 ;)

I just got the Canon PIXMA iP5000, not tried the CD-R/DVD-R printing yet, as I have no printable discs.

Although the quality of photos produced is without a doubt the best I've seen.

Cheers

I recently bought a Canon Pixma IP4000 and it`s fantastic. I` was stunned with the photo quality and extremely pleased with it`s cd/dvd printing abilities. Heartily recommended!

I`ve read on other threads that Epson will send you a new CD tray for free if you phone them and say your current one`s not working.
