Cover Versions (Beware - Old Fogey Music)

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 28th April 2012, 01:48

I was listening to "...sing Bacharach & David" on BBC4 tonight and browsing the internet when suddenly my ears were assaulted by somebody slaughtering "What`s New Pussycat".  The culprit was crooner Mel Torme, backed by a full orchestra.  It was bad enough the orchestra was over-egging the orchestration of the song, but Mr Torme himself was happily singing the song his way - his tempo, his rhythm, his melody.  No resemblance whatsoever to the Academy-Award-Nominated for Best Song 1965 version sung by Tom Jones.  Literally all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order.

Do these old-school "I can sing it better than him" cover versions of well-known or iconic songs drive anybody else bananas?

I think the problem with that era is often even the originals you remember are covers themselves.

Sort of related, try a bit of Richard Cheese...

The original Hound Dog before old snake hips got hold of it and for me a lot better.

Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

just watching Later...with Jools Holland from Tue night, Jool and Paul Simon mention this....

it works really well, cos they haven't just turned it into a metal song, it's interesting in a kind of opposite of Johnny Cash covering NIN Hurt and other contemporary rock songs kind of way :)

I really love his version of Hurts, helped by the video, and his version of Personal Jesus is pretty good as well...

Funnily enough downloaded the new (ish) album from Disturbed yesterday - brilliant and what a great cover of The Sound Of Silence.

Quite like a bit of Lissie - seen her a few times - really like her version of I will Always Love you.

Can't seem to stick up a proper link - so hope this works?
