Page 1 of 4K TV

So first we went over to flat screen LCD and Plasma, then they brought us 720P HD, then 1080P FULL HD, and then 3D....

Now Sony are set to launch 4K definition, which is 4096 x 3072, or 4 times the resolution of 1080P...

Their 84 inch screen, due to be launched this year is rumoured to be hitting the shelves at $30,000, but I guess if it catches on, it`ll drop in price just as rapidly as the others.

Apparently they have already produced a 4K blu-ray player, though it all seems a bit pointless if there aren`t any 4K blu-ray discs, but I guess that`s coming.

Oh, and it is rumoured (I don`t think it has been confirmed, but I guess it would make sense), that the PS4 will be 4K compatible, just as the PS3 was 3D compatible, years ahead of the media`s time.

So that`ll cost an arm and a leg again then!

Anyone here think they might buy into 4K when it reaches our shores, or are you happy with 1080P/3D etc?

I still have a 14" black n white portable in the loft (and will keep it for my ZX81 that`s up there too!) and I can remember my first TV when I was about 6 and moving the aerial about every time I changed the channel.

We were conversing about how we remember ghosting and grainy pictures on normal TV and the difference nowadays.
Her TV is a 37" HDReady linked to a Sky+ box and Freeview recorder both of which use scart.
I could see the artifacts on her screen, the black levels etc being a bit too grey for me but when you think of what we used to think was fantastic (anyone else have that 22" colour TV that looked like a cupboard where you pulled the roller door across the front....? ;) )
In her eyes it was perfectly fine and she was more than happy with the quality especially on DVD.
I played a Blu on her setup and she said she could obviously see the difference but was still happy with DVD.

And that, I think, is the crux for those who look at it realistically and not in the keep-up-with-the-Jonses` mentality.

You reach a point where quality is more than acceptable, that Super HiVision demo looked fantastic but it was more quality than actually needed for want of a better word.
If it`s in a cinema style setup then yes, more quality is better but for a normal everyday TV I`m happy enough with my Panasonic.

Interesting reading, though to a certain extent preaching to the converted. :)

I guess they need something to flog us, as 3D isn`t really cutting it. :/

I saw an 8K tv at the IBC exibition last week, and it was mad quality. Saw the 100meters final, and you could see the handerchiefs in the shirt pockets of the people in the crowd !!

I think the Next Big Thing in display technology is going to be large-scale, flexible displays - entire wall-width displays which will normally carry multiple feeds. As they`ll be a touchscreen interface they`ll have to be able to look good ultra close-up, hence the requirement for 4K or 8K. Then other times you`ll sit back in your seat and the whole wall will become a super-sized theatre screen. I suggested flexible displays as you could have the display wrap round the corner of the room rather than flat against one wall. Sat at the focal point of the screen, it`d be like Home Cinerama than Home Theatre.

EDIT: If you`re talking about a wall-sized screen, then 4m by 2.16m (13ft x 7ft), which would be a fairly modest living room wall would result in a 4K image resolved as one square millimetre pixels which would be fine if you were about fourteen feet away from the image but pretty awful if you were at the screen manipulating the touch surface.

....and then there are those of us with a 42 inch that`s got a knackered screen and haven`t bothered with HD yet cos old father time has already put the blur filter in on both eyes and you can`t be a*sed having a pair of specs just for the TV.
