Cheap Subwoofwer <£150 - Any recommendations?

Jibba (Competent) posted this on Friday, 8th March 2002, 14:54

Can anybody recommend a good, reasonably priced subwoofer (must be a separate not part of a package) to makeup the .1 of my 5.0 system?

Any help appreciated!

Well, I`ve been looking around too, at that price range. Just saw a post on a newsgroup (uk.media.home-cinema) that in the April edition of What Hifi, the Richer Sounds ad has a special price on the Paradigm PS1000 (£150 from £199) and the Celestion S80 (£199 to £79).
Don`t think this issue is in the shops yet, but worth a listen - I`m going to book my demo now!
Can`t find anything about the Celestion, but the poster in the NG chose it at full £199 price over the Paradigm, which gets good user write ups (see http://www.audioreview.com).
Not going to live up to the RELs of this world, but worth a listen, I reckon.

The Paradigm PDR-10 is/was £150 from Richers and gets better reviews than the PS-1000.

i`ve heard that the kef psw1000 is pretty good and you can pick it up for under £150 at most internet sites and good hifi specialists.

Neon - you`re right, but I think I`ll listen to both. Looking at the reviews, it seems that the PS1000 gets a few REALLY bad ratings, which may tip the overall average.
Thing I`m concerned about is positioning it in the room - not so much the tinkering that might be needed, but finding a place where it works and is also out of the way. From the user reviews of the Paradigms (particualrly the 1000) it seems it is quite sensitive to room positioning.

I was considering the same but after auditioning and listening to a Rel
I decided straight away that waiting and saving the extra money to get a REL was without question DEFINATELY worth it.
The main difference i noticed, and i am no expert, was that with the Rel if you closed your eyes you just couldn`t tell where in the room it was positioned.
