RGB Scart connection - Picture Quality (novice)

Alona (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 17th December 2001, 21:28

Hi
I'm looking to buy a DVD Player with an RGB scart. I also have as most a sky digital box with RGB out.

Using my Toshiba TV with 3 scart sockets only the first one of them works with RGB, How do I get the best picture? Do I?
A. Connect the dvd to the 1st scart?
B. Connect the skybox to the 1st scart?
C. Get a scart splitter box connect it to the 1st scart or what?
Thanks

Alona

The best in you situation i say is connect the dvd via the Sky box on the VCR input this way you will get RGB without getting a scart splitter box but you will not be able to record via scart from the sky box unless you pig back video out and sound out from the sky box this is what i have done. Then wire your video to scart 2. Other alternative is you can use a s-video lead if you are not to fussy about pic quality.

Although RGB is techinically better than s-video Some televisions seem to produce a better picture when used with s-video. You need to try both types of connections to see which gives the best picture.

If you are happy with s-video quality then you could connect the dvd using this signal and your Sky box using the rgb connection. (I am assuming that one of your other scarts accepts s-video).

Both of these signals are better than using composite video

Have a search through the forums for discussions on rgb vs. s-video to see other peoples opinions on which is best

Hi

Thanks for writting. Yes i can use s-video on one of my scarts.

I was just trying to get the same standard of picture on the tv as i get from the sky box so this info is great to have.

Now that i have add some feed back on this mater i just have to get a good DVD player. I was looking at the Yelo 800 or Kiiri ????
some along these lines anyway.

Thanks Alona

Whatever you do, DO NOT loop your DVD through your SKY box so that both items go into AV1.
I had endless picture problems when I did this and I blamed the DVD player. It wasn`t the player.I nearly had a perfectly good player boxed and back to the shop. It was because I was looping it through SKY. It`s something to do with the bypass circuit in the SKY box being easily damaged, leading to picture problems. It doesn`t affect the SKY picture by the way. Only the picture of whatever you`re looping thru it.
By far and way the best way is direct connection as follows.
1/ SKY to AV1 RGB
2/ DVD to AV2 S-VHS
I promise you will not notice any drop in picture quality putting your DVD onto S-VHS and putting it into AV2.

Hello

I`ve got the following connections

DVD RGB to VHS RGB AV2

DVD S-Video to TV S-Video (If you dont want to have the VCR turned on and assuming you have the Audio going through an Amp.)

Sky RGB Out and VHS RGB Out to Scart Selection Box which is connected to the TV. Get these from Argos cheap.

Also have another Scart RGB going from the Sky box to a Copy Enhancer box which then plugs into the front of the VHS recorder via composite/phonos (i.e. Camcorder input - This takes the AV2 on the VHS, but only when plugged into the front.)

Worth buying a £20 gold plated sheilded scart lead to put from your DVD to VHS, if your thinking about backing up your DVD films to VHS.

Hi
Thanks for that info

At the moment I have The Sky box in AV1 This is the only RGB socket.
The Video in AV2
AV3 is spare but it works also as the s-video in / Scart 3
Good scart leads are used.

I need to have every thing connected and working as normal but with the DVD as an extra. It doesn`t have to be on but at least pluged in with no wires coming round the front of the mashines.

I will play it all using the surround sound on the TV untill i get an amp.
