Hi, been viewing this site for a while, good to be in such august company.

Bought one of these puppy`s on Saturday at local ASDA.
Player is actually UK modified ILO DVR04 (see VCDHELP.COM).
Plays and records well, tried Mirror +R on sale in local £1 emporium and works fine, RGB enabled (no colour saturation problems like Liteon 5005 that it replaced), has same MR hack, also has macro bypass via scart connector by putting video in pause mode, then pressing record on DVDR remote, after about 20 seconds press play on video and it will record to end of film. Tried this as experiment as small son has series of videos that get played every day and are wearing out, film had macro on as just pressing record while film playing brought up "copy protected" on screen. Asda look set to roll out other models as compatible disc list mentions DVR-231, DVR-330 and DVR-530, A 5006 clone which does + and - and CDR/RW, all in all very happywith this for the princely sum of £139.97 (GBP) :D

Hi, TUFTY65

I see you have a 4KUS dvr-230

Can you tell me more about it, I seen this DVR in Asda and I was just about to buy it, then I seen on the box that the play back of DVDs depend on the content and quality if the DVD. Have you found any problems on playback of DVDs weather pr-recorded or recorded by your self.

also I see that you replied to a question on making this multi region and turning the macrovision off, the hack you gave dose this also switch the macrovision off

Thanks for your help

Hi GaryEbs,

Found 4KUS to be good playback machine for both retail discs and DVD+/- R/RW done on pc with Pioneer 105, Optorite DD1205 and MSI DR8, also ok with VCD and SVCD, home made and shop bought. As for the hack, this just gives you multi region, tried region 1, 2, 3 with no problems, macro still on, the macro off came from the fact that over on vcdhelp.com theres a thread there relating to an ILO DVDR04 made for Walmart that the 4KUS is based on with new PAL tuner and scart sockets, a guy there stated that he had recorded Macro free from the tuner? so I thought I`d try it for the stated reason, kids have loads of prerecorded tapes that are wearing away and are not available on DVD or new tapes, need to test this more as only done limited series (5 Discs). Tried el-cheapo Bulkpak DVD+RW, Mirror +R, Pheonix +R (also Mega Cheap) and all usual eg. Verbatim +RW, Samsung+RW and Phillips +RW with no coasters, all in all really happy with this machine and at the price a bargain.
Hope that helps.

Regards Chris...

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the quick reply, have you tried recording -r and -rw. From what you have said I will buy one, I need to find an Asda nr to me (Chatham) that has one in stock. Asda stock is a bit hit and miss even the staff do not know when they have new stock

Thanks for all your help.

Garry

Hi Garry,

Machine does not record to -R or -RW, only playback, better than my 5006B quality wise but only +R & +RW, Asda in Pudsey only had 6 when I bought one, had them for a week but sold none.

All the best with your purchase and glad to help.

Chris.

Just bought one of these to transfer old VHS recordings to disc and so far (after a day`s use) I`m very impressed. I`ve been using a Philips (an 880 and a 70 I had to send back for a refund when it died after six months), and the 4KUS has so far outperformed either machine. As I`ve only done a limited amount of recording with it so far I can`t really say anything about quality but the bitrate matches that of the Philips. I miss the 150min recording option the Philips has (SP+ or M3 mode), but as the machine is more or less dedicated to transfers under 2 hours per disc, I don`t think that`ll be an issue. The recorder has a much better user interface (and menu system) than the Philips. The "guider" menu system is nice and simple and makes finalisation of the disc a less worrying prospect giving a progress meter rather than just enigmatically saying "finalizing" on the display. The machine accepts and outputs RGB as well as composite video, and can output a composite signal as well. There`s a direct firewire connection for a DV camcorder and you can control the camcorder from the player. I`ve tried ultracheap Bulkpaq whites in it and they worked fine, so I think it`ll work perfectly with any quality disc.

Oh, and checking the maker`s plate on the back it says "Lite-On Corporation", so I reckon it`s a quality piece of kit under the hood.

You have the right to remain silent
What you lack is the capacity.

Hi Garry,

If you have`nt yet got the 4KUS DVD Recorder Asda in Canterbury (on A28 Sturry Road) have got about 45-50 in stock (as of today).

I did speak to Asda customer services this morning regarding stores that stock it and was told `It`s £139, however Argos are doing one (Lite on) for £119,so I think we might be reducing our price soon` !!!!!

Had a good look at it in store, looks very good and will be getting one myself once I have taken my very faulty Philips DVDR610 back to Sainsburys for a refund.

If you have indeed got one already, maybe you could let me know what you think of it.

Cheers.

Steve.

The 4KUS DVR-230 does have a Nicam tuner. This is according to the guy I spoke
to on the Asda Electrical Helpline. (0845 300 7775).
