Looking For A DVD Recorder Any Suggestions

madwolf (Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 30th June 2004, 21:29

I am finally considering buying a DVD recorder; however there are a few questions no doubt people within this forum will help me with. I would like one that writes to the Minus format (only because I can obtain these discs cheaper than the Plus format) is there any difference in the quality? Will it also write to Minus RW discs (over and over)? I would also like one that is multi-regional, and will also play vcd's, imported and backup discs.

Or if there is a good enough argument for a recorder in the Plus format then I am open to persuasion (Yes your right I dont really know what I`m looking for)

Any suggestions would be grateful (Oh and reasonably priced)

Thanks

You won`t do better than the Panasonic E55 at £229 from Richer Sounds if you can get one. The re-recordable media is dvd RAM so if you can`t live with this then you need a -r/ -rw machine like the Pioneer but its not quite as good as the Panny (no RGB in for a start).

+r machines are ok but much less flexible. At the higher quality settings (up to 2hrs) you won`t tell the difference from the original material in either format except on a monster screen (ie 6ft or bigger)

I reflect mirror`s opinion :D
Friends of mine are amazed when I demo what my E55 can do.
They always think it`s much more expensive than the £220 I bought it for.
Mine isn`t multiregion, but they can be bought that way no probs.

you should clarify with the dealer weather or not it`s multi-region, as they have to be modified, they are not multi-region as standard.

I bought mine from richer 3 weeks ago for £220 and it came as Multi Region.

Very pleased with it so far.

If you can wait, then:

About disc prices, have you looked at SVP Communications for + or - discs? They are about the same. Have a look here

Don`t wait. Get the Panny E55. NOW. I bought my Panny over a year ago & it`s the best thing since sliced bread. I know 2 people who kept waiting & finally bought in the last few weeks, in the meantime I`ve loads of programmes from TV on top quality DVD.

Although I expect the prices to come down I expect that most of the price drop will be for the cheap + system. The supieror DVD-RAM system won`t come down so much unless Panasonic give licences to a cheaper make that can make one with the reliability the DVD-RAM deserves.

The only choice is the Sony RDR-GRX7

I was so happy/impressed with them I bought two!

Hmm, you may like the fact that they write both media which is one of the only systems that can and you can not do TOC on +RW disks

A lot of people will argue with me but nothing will change my mind - not a 120GB HDD (I love DVD-RAM too by the way but you lock yourself into a niche tech there).

Sony - The only way to Record to DVD-+R/RW.....

Oh yeah - they are Multi -Region out the box too.
