Any point in me buying a DVD player?

neil2000 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 22nd March 2001, 12:25

I currently only have a normal 21" TV with no surround sound capability.

Is there any point in me buying a DVD player or would I be simply wasting my money?

Hope someone can give some constructive advice.

Thanks in advance

HI
I have an ordinary 21" tele and I have a dvd.
I have connected my hifi to the nicam video so I now have stereo sound and the television picture is in "letterbox" style.
It has increased my viewing pleasure greatly.
I would go for it.

YES.

When I bought my first DVD player I only had a 25" mono TV. Even with a mono TV you can still appreciate the superb picture quality, the extra features on DVD`s (deleted scenes, commentries etc.), the ability to jump to any scene in the film.

As and when you can upgrade to DD 5.1/DTS amp. I`ve now got a DTS amp and 32" widescreen TV and by far the biggest improvement was getting the amp.

Any way welcome to the wonderful world of DVD (your credit cards worst nigtmare, so many bargains so little money).

No. There is no point in buying a dvd player unless your TV is at least 40 Sq. yds

The last three postings were completely off topic, so let`s haul it in right now, guys.

Right, for Stubo :

A 5.1/DTS amplifier is one that is capable of decoding all the lovely 0s and 1s that make up the audio signal which is passed from a DVD player along a digital cable.

Basically 5.1 and DTS are two competing surround sound systems, the first from Dolby, whereby the audio signal is split into five speakers (front left, front right, centre, rear left and rear right) to create that authentic `wrapround` cinema-like sound. The 0.1 refers to a Low Frequency Effects channel (your booms and explosions, and kick-ass hip-hop beats), which is usually provided by a subwoofer, and preferably one that has it`s own amplifying capability (usually called `active`).

To enjoy DVD to its full extreme, and assuming the wallet is willing, then an amp with DTS and 5.1 is probably the best choice. This isn`t essential, however, to enjoy DVD - a bulk standard TV will do. Admittedly DTS is only available on two titles in the UK (`Gladiator` and `Chicken Run`) but discs from the US are more likely to have DTS soundtracks, especially more recent releases.

There is a whole plethora of new `super-surround` systems, which include an additional rear centre speaker (6.1), and lots of high-falutin` new names like DTS Matrix, etc. For the budget buyer, tho` £200 should fetch you a decent amp, although you`ll need speakers (a subwoofer isn`t essential).

I hope this helps you out, but if you have any more questions about amps please feel free to ask.

My apologies if you were offended by the two postings after your thread. Calm down lads, please, we were all newbies once, yeah ?

Watching VHS will never be the same again, also put a cushion on the floor for when your jaw hits it. It will when you see and hear the quality of DVD for the first time.
