BEST MULTI-REGION DVD PLAYER........

Kase (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 8th January 2001, 19:49

I want a good quality multi-region DVD player for under £300 (no need for Mp3). I have looked at the following modified machines from multiregionmagic.co.uk and linkonline.co.uk;

Pioneer DV535 £225 (incl. VAT and delivery)
Panasonic DVDRV40 £249 (incl. VAT + £12 deliv)
Sony DVP S335 £279 (incl. VAT + £12 deliv)
Sony DVPS535 £340 (incl. VAT and delivery) (a bit too much)

Which would you advise ? Or is it better to get a multi-region player that hasn`t been modified ? I have also heard the Sony can be put into test mode (does anyone know hot to do this ?)

I`ve just bought the Panasonic RV-40 for £247.93 from Techtronics.com and that includes Multi Region Mod and delivery. An all-round excellent player!!

Hi Kase, still haven`t made up your mind then? I`ll give it a shot.

The one that I would pick out of these four, is the Pioneer. (but u already knew this :)
Why? Because it has crisp sound and picture, plays CD-R`s and CD-RW`s (wich the Panasonic and Sony don`t do) and has a fare price.
The only minor is that it can be a little bit noisier then the others.

But if u want a built-in Dolby Digital decoder like the Panasonic DVD-RV40 and the Sony DVP-S535 have.
Then I would recommend the LG 3350(e), wich has very nice picture and good sound and also plays CD-R`s and CD-RW`s like the Pioneer does.
It can also be set multiregion with a remote hack and has a very good price.
The only downside on the LG is that it can`t play VCD (wich some people are working on).

Go and have a look at:

http://www.homecinemachoice.com/testbench/index.html

where u can compare the reviews of the LG 3350, The Panasonic RV40 and the Sony S335 (wich just lacks the built-in decoder of the S535).
There u will see that the LG gets the most points.

If u want more info on the LG 3350 and its hack then I would suggest this site:

http://members.tripod.co.uk/ittroll/

and to keep things fare

http://aiwaownersnetwork.tripod.com

wich is the personal page of Jimbo about the Aiwa XVD-370 (wich is a clone of the LG except for the built-in decoder and that it does play VCD`s)

Have fun reading!! :)

Okay, I`ve almost made up my mind to get the Pioneer DV535. Any recommedations as to where I should buy it ? I`m considering linkonline.co.uk, any experience on this company ?

Also is there someplace I can read a review on the Pioneer (hopefully one done in the last couple of months) ?

Levin, is the picture close to the quality of the slightly more expensive pioneer`s like the 7** ?

Pioneer are GREAT machines I have the 636 which I am very happy with, The pictures are great. So I should think the 535 would be as good but withouth the onboard decorders.

If u can read a little German, go and have a look at Area DVD.
They have rated a lot of recent players.
If u can`t understand it, then just look at the quoted amount of stars.

By the way it`s lievn ;)

They sell them here for £229 and that includes macro off and multi region.
See my new posting in the general forum concerning anyone who as bought from upgrade heaven and if they found them ok.
I too have decided to go for the pioneer 535 and will probably order it tomorrow unless i get any negative posts.

Sorry for the spelling lievn. I think I`ll buy this one. I`m not very technical, but I`ve been reading a lot about firmware, do most players have upgradeable firmware ? if so does it make any significant amount of difference ?

Whats the Techtonics web site URL ? Although I`ve read their mods are fitted to well.
