wharfedale 750s vs Dr Phibes

carthage_damian (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 4th March 2003, 13:24

Be gentle with me...

Dr Phibes [MGM, US disk etc] is one of the reasons I BOUGHT a DVD as it`s deleted here.

On an el-cheapo multi region player, it works. Other aspects of the player sucked though. Hence the Wharfedale which is successfully hacked.

On which you get the splash screen, then the player acts as if it`s moving on to next segment, then nothing. I took the disk back, same thing on a replacement.

Player? Disk? On the disk I see no evidence of RCE encoding, or whatever it is.

possibly a firmware issue- try other R1 discs on the 750 and see if they work. If others don`t work- I suggest getting the player replaced from your local tescos.

Hmmm...other R1 disks do indeed work.

I will therefore scuttle repugnantly back to my local tescos then and demand a more credible model so I can a] watch bad films at deafening volume and b] earn important social kudos.

Thanks.

Just to let you know that if you take it back with a region 1 issue they may not replace it. I had a problem with a W`dale 750s playing DTS on R1 discs (intermittent drop-outs) and I was told that it is a Region 2 player and can only be exchanged if it has a problem with R2 discs. Just be warned.

Thanks.

It was Richer Sounds, anyway. I just didn`t get the tescos thing above...took it that the model is seen as downmarket or something.

I really don`t care as long as multi-region really *is*.

But then again if it was all so simple there`s be no need for forums like this and the companies wouldn`t be able to guard their respective profit margins I guess...

Hope I fluke it.

I have a 750s and moved to Canada two years ago. Obviously, everything I rent here is R1 yet I`ve never had a problem! You don`t even need a special transformer to convert 110V supply to 240V.

My new TV is NSTC (not UK PAL) and it still works.

The only problem I have is that I can`t playback R2 PAL disks on my NSTC TV. At least when/if I come home, I`ll be able to play my R1 NSTC disks on a UK PAL TV.

Carthage,
The Tescos comment was because the Wharfedale was originally sold only by Tescos, so the poster assumed that was where you bought it. They sold it as a region 2 machine, so region 1 problems were not part of their remit and they wouldn`t deal with any region 1 issues. I think when they stopped selling them Richer Sounds must have got hold of the last batches of them which is how you got yours, if they were selling them as multi region then you should be able to take it up with them. Hope this clarifies things,

Dave
