Encore 450 artifacts...

Doobie (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 19th December 2000, 15:07

I`ve just bought one of these and am disturbed by the artifacts roaming around in the dark scenes... The only film I`ve tried so far is Final Destination if that makes any difference. Also, i was only connected via the three cheap phono leads that come with the player. Would a good quality S-Video cable get rid of the artifacts or is there anything else that would help (apart from dropping it out the upstairs window). The only reason I bought this machine was for the macro disable then after ordering it I hear there are problems with that too. Any help appreciated - and no I am not going to buy an Aiwa/Hitachi/Scan....

Cheers,
Doobie.

Definitely try a SCART between the player and your TV, or an S-VIDEO if you can as these will give you a much better picture.

I didn`t realise my rented Sanyo widescreen had an RGB compatible SCART socket and the picture on my Encore has gone from so-so to magnificent, particularly after spending a very-well-worth-it £12 on a good quality SCART lead.

I take it your TV has SCART in ? If so, is it RGB or S-VIDEO compatible ? If so, in General Set Up change video out to SCART and then SCART OUT to whatever (just COMPOSITE if your TV is not RGB or S-VID capable : shame if it isn`t as COMPOSITE is pants)

It may also be the disc - the Encore can be a little fussy sometimes, but luckily, picture problems are something I`ve never experienced.

Thanks for the help Clayts and Ironduck thanks for the smart comments (have you nothing better to be doing, sir?).

TV has SCART in - not sure if it`s RGB or S-vid compat - will check this later. It has got an S-Vid connection on the side. I presume that will give the same quality as S-Vid through a SCART?

Actually I was stating a fact the ESS chipset mixed with other components doesnt seem to fair as well in the picture quality when compared to the Zoran which is in the tosh.

You explained the symptons perfectly : artifacts in shaded areas.
some companies have changed components like the Video Digital/Analogue chip to fix this but I dont think encore have.

You can tell an ESS player straight away, they have the loopholes menu built into them.

So I suppose they where smart comments after all:)

I have the 450 also and on final dest- I have artifacts too.
The exact same thing happens on magnolia as well.
Both films are made by the same company NEW LINE CINEMA

I phoned encore tech dept and they said the firmware needed upgrading

4 weeks later and no disk has been sent as they promised.

Also the exoricst is really bad as is clockwork orange in the dark parts
of the films.
I hope the firmware fixes it.

Well I`m still waiting for mine to appear...4 weeks and counting!

S`pose it`s cause I want a black one (already got a silver toaster, Ironduke!)

I seem to be reading about firmware upgrades for various problems - do I expect some hassles when I eventually get delivery?

Bedlam!

SILENCE FUNBOY:P

I seriously doubt a new firmware would fix the artifacts problem as the Manhattan has the same ESS4318 chip as the Encore and the Scan player. Why would Manhattan replace chips, when a firmware change could have solved the problem.

At the end of the day The ESS chipset does not measure up to the Zoran and C-Cube chipsets.

The firmware in mine is 3.3D which I think is the latest one. Like the Duck says I can`t see an upgrade fixing this.... If an upgrade got rid of macro then I`d be a bit happier.
