It's enough that the Malaysians believe it.
I'm sure they all love their mothers and are kind to small children and animals. The realisation though that there are consequences to deliberately disrespecting local beliefs and traditions shouldn't come as a total shock.

In fairness, the whole fuss seems to have been exacerbated by a politician who linked the two. Saw an interview with the owner of the hotel the tourists were staying in who effectively said that while the locals were more than a little peeved at their nudity, the whole thing would have died away quite quickly if not for the incendiary words of said politician.
Is there a local election coming up?
