DVD Recorders - Told you so
Okay, nobody likes a smartarse, but I was put down so thoroughly over my idea of a spec. for a DVD recorder, I couldn`t help feeling vindicated that Toshiba (and who am I to argue with them?) had similar thoughts when designing their new box of tricks. I quote the article from today`s Reviewer front page -
"The unit integrates a 30GB hard disc along with a 4.7GB DVD-RAM drive, allowing storage of up to 33.5 hours of video images. This combination is designed for you to save programs temporarily to the hard drive, then build libraries of scenes and programs onto DVD-RAM discs."
Ooo, I do feel smug ;o)
RE: DVD Recorders - Told you so
I though of that a year back!
If only I`d copyrighted my thoughts, this year I`d have been a millionaire!
Unfortunately, I think the industry have been worrying about this also.
Copyright!!!
MiCO DVD-RAM will be the dogs bo**ocks.

I`ve deleted all traces of your prediction Mr Oates, I received a bribe from Toshiba for doing so. They are regular lurkers on these forums you know. ;-)
RE: DVD Recorders - Told you so
Actually Carrot if you read recent articles, Mico are using there resources on a DVD Player/VCD Recorder as DVD is no where near as big in South East ASIA.

OK, I feel the need to reply here...
DVDR machines? Samsung 2000 ( or is it 2200.. I can`t remember) @ £999.00
Has been available for sale for about 2 months, but the stock hasn`t arrived yet.
But why aren`t the people "in the know" buying them?
Simple!
Buy a TiVo @ £400 and don`t subscribe to Sky, just use it like a vcr and get 10 hours of DVD quality on a hard drive, and have it as a back up for yer video too.
Want longer recording times? Two solutions!
1) Drop the quality down and get up to 40 hours (Ideal if using as a video and recording analogue signals)
2) Check out some of the American TiVo sites and "hack" the TiVo, then add the size of hard drive you wish to use!!
Granted, this doesn`t let you keep a permanent master and loadsa discs around the house, but what really would you want a DVDR to do?
If it`s making backups of discs, then get a DVD Writer for yer PC!
I believe blank discs for the Samsung are currently around £20 and only do about 1 1/4 recording at quality.. don`t rush out for a DVDR just yet guys.. the price is sure to fall! BIG STYLE!

RE: DVD Recorders - Told you so
But who wants to spend £1800 on a dedicated unit, when you could probably get a decent PC + Video capture, etc.
You might even be able to include the new pioneer DVD-R/RW & CD-R/RW ATAPI drive.

I know the argument about the average consumer preferring to keep things simple, but the user interface couldn`t be that simple on a box like this. It probably has on screen GUI to run it all.
What I would like to see is a component based black box solution (or silver ;-)) with a network option to allow connection and remote control via a PC. Particularly with the state of flux in DVD recordable standards.
I doubt you will see a recordable standalone system for under £500 in the next five years. Of course I could be wrong !
The line is definately getting thinner.
RE: DVD Recorders - Told you so
Within the next 5 year`s DVD will be superceded by that new clear disc media(cant remember the name).
Clear Disk Media ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!:P

RE: DVD Recorders - Told you so
I reckon we`ll be damn lucky if we see a DVD recorder that can do direct digital copies under £1000 at all, at least not from the majors. Remember DAT? The music industry were so scared of its ability to record CDs at a higher sampling rate that they had it crippled with copy protection and, even now, they are kept deliberately priced outside of the domestic arena. I feel that DVD Recorders will go the same way.
As for Tivo, everything I`ve read about it so far seems to indicate that it is virtually useless without program info. If anyone knows different, please let me know, as I am looking for a better way than VHS to record off non-Sky satellite channels.
RE: DVD Recorders - Told you so
non-Sky Channels?
Are we talking Digital European Stuff (With PIC/EEPROM Card?)
The Nokia DVBxxxx have pure digital out that can be streamed to a SCSI drive, so I`m told.
