Have your political views changed with age?

RJS (undefined) posted this on Tuesday, 20th September 2011, 14:01

They say most people get more right wing as they get older, which made me wonder, do people here find they are becoming more right wing as they age?

I think if anything I`m more liberal than I was when I was a teenager.

I dunno. I was brought up left wing by my dad, then when I started voting, I went right wing cos I thought Maggie was the best thing since sliced bread.

As I`ve got older, I think I am tipping back more to the centre, so I can actually see myself voting liberal in the future! Not sure right now.

You do change, but I don`t think everyone goes more to the right.

I have gone more liberal. A lot more. My right wing side does rear its ugly head from time to time though.

No, your memory serves you correctly. I still feel the same way on that one. If a person is considered too dangerous to release back into society for the rest of their life, why on earth should we keep them alive to great expense to taxpayers? Still, that`s a whole other topic of discussion. lol

Yes and no.
From my viewpoint what`s considered middle has moved to the left.
In todays politics I`d consider myself right of middle but with no intention of ever voting Tory, or Labour for that matter. Probably Liberal if dragged into the polling booth but not entirely comfortable with them either.
Now if there was a Grumpy Old Men Party.......

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

Yes I can relate to this. I`ve never actually voted right, and would never, but occasionally out it pops, even if as I`m saying it I don`t really believe it.

Generally I`m more liberal as I`ve gotten older, but in a funny way that isn`t really political so much as it is pastoral or even pagan. But then that`s possibly a reaction to not liking city life or society in general.

Always been a Conservative and never voted any other way or been tempted to - spent the weeks prior to 1997 warning people that Labour would mess up the economy at some point only to be ignored, but I was right...

Have found over the years though that my views have mellowed so I`m generally more to the centre than most Conservatives I know.

Did you also foresee, considered by many, them having the most successful Chancellor in the UK?  And despite the mess they made of it, that no other single party could get enough votes to oust them?  What about them causing the financial crises in Greece, Ireland, Italy and the US as well as here?  Surely that was their fault too?
To answer the question though, Ive never thought Thatcher was `the best thing` but was evil.
I`ve changed in that I now think they`re pretty much all as bad as each other...

Not much of a Labourite myself. As SJ says they`re all the same. But neither do I go in for this idea that it`s Labour that made a mess of the economy. It`s something that`s happened all over the world, not just us, and the Tories constantly harping on about the previous incumbents is doing nothing for their own credibility imho. About time they changed the record, because they`ve really worn that one out.
