Homebrew - beer, not piracy...

miikeyblue82 (Elite) posted this on Monday, 3rd January 2011, 13:46

Got a homebrew lager kit for Christmas off my folks. Never done it before so expecting minimal success from the first few batches.

Just wondered if any of you guys had ever brewed your own? Any hints/tips?

Don`t be in too much of a hurry to drink it, don`t drink it all at once, start the second batch & have a second barrel ready.

I wasn`t one of the homebrew bottle it brigade, so I don`t know if that makes it better or worse to consume.

CO2 injector might be useful if you are a lager drinker like moi.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Never has so little had to be explained by me to so many so often.

Pics of each stage, or it never happened.

If it does happen, its photoshopped.

It`s currently fermenting in a bucket at home... smelling quite lager-like but probably tastes like sh*t.

I`ll get a pic of it later... gotta transfer it to a barrel in a couple of days time. Should be drinkable in a couple of weeks, allegedly.

I`ve never brewed my own, but a couple of friends of mine have, and the quality of beer they made definitely improved as they got the hang of it.

As mentioned above patience is important, I think a rookie mistake is using too much sugar to increase strength/speed process. From what I remember them saying first few times it`s best to follow the instructions to the letter, weigh everything precisley, then as you get more confident/experienced you can experiment a bit.

I`ll get in contact with them if you want to see if they have any other advice.

good luck

Used to do quite a bit of beer and wine.
With the silly prices you can buy it for now (esp. wine) it`s just not worth it any more. :(
Is quite satisfying though. :)

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

bah... i wanted a HB kit for christmas, but my pleas fell on deaf ears :(

used to brew lager in my teens, so i`d guess the kits have come on leaps
and bounds since.

the only advice i can offer is:-

1. keep the brewing kit clean
2. use decent quality ingredients (or kits)
3. don`t try to rush the brewing process (my cousin did this with a heating belt... his lager came out like flat cats ****).
4. once your brew is ready, send a bottle to you fellow reviewer peeps for sampling :D

oh, i`d recommend a keg with a Co2 injection system over bottles any day!!

Much the same as a previous post. The stuff is all still in the loft but the price of beer now doesn`t make it worth the effort.
Maybe if I ever get a load of spare time.
Can`t answer for lager but bitter was fine.
You may love Grolsch and hate Fosters, just a case of finding the right brand for your taste.

Definitely don`t rush it though, unless your constipated and need a good clean out. It`ll beat colonic irrigation all ends up.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary
