Page the Oracle no more

Jitendar Canth (Reviewer) posted this on Tuesday, 15th December 2009, 13:33

Ok, so it`s been a millennium since it was called The Oracle, but today, ITV`s Teletext Service dies, vanishes from our screens, is no more. There was a time when it was part of my routine to check Teletext and Ceefax, it was like my morning paper. But digital text is so slow and cumbersome, and the Internet so convenient. I guess the writing was on the wall.

Anyway, Teletext on Analog and Digital ends today. RIP Bamboozle. :(

My dad`s been whinging about this for weeks. He still used ITV Teletext (and BBC which I believe will follow shortly on analogue) up until today for news and sports results. He doesn`t have the internet, nor Sky, nor a mobile phone, so apart from buying a newspaper (which he doesn`t often do) or sitting through a news programme on TV (he hates 80% of it so it bores him to tears), he reckons this has now deprived him of a decent information service.

So it had one fan. :¦

I gave up on all kinds of teletext years ago. That`s for dinosaurs! 8)

Don`t worry, if it makes money, they`re keeping it. I think Teletext Holidays will still be there, as will be the Horse Racing on C4, and for some reason GameCentral, but the rest of it goes.

Very sad :(

I remember it opening in the 90s and everyone thought it was the height of technology!

I also remember the old service closing by shrinking into a little square then disappearing :)

I use(d) text everyday - Digitiser on 4. But we had our analogue switch off a few weeks back and now have to use digital. It`s still as slow and clunky as ever. :( It is only ITV losing it isn`t it - BBC text will remain??...

as far as Im aware ceefax isnt going anywhere its just text on ITV, ch4 and ch5 on both analogue and digital as it was loss making (I assume ceefax is fine on the due to the unique way the BBC is funded ;) )

I use text quite a lot for sports results, news headlines etc. Yeah the internet has taken over but text is one push of a remote control button in an ad break, or while Im eating my breakfast, Im not firing up the pc just to check the latest fotball score!

Shows how times have changed that I remember thinking my Nan`s tv was the height of technology because hers had `Fasttext` (Where you could use the colour buttons!) But I haven`t even thought of using CeeFax/TeleText for donkeys.

I remember my new Loewe CRT having a 1600 page memory - was well impressed that you could flick between teletext pages at your leisure.... until you changed channels and it cleared the memory out.

Bamboozle - that is a blast from the past.
