Page 1 of Charlie Brooker - What A ****!

Watched Nosewipe - sorry, Newswipe for the first time tonight. I was enjoying most of it, in a good-grief-somebody-should-change-his-medication sort-of way. A lot of it was spot on and absolutely hilarious.

Then he got to that bit about Susan Boyle off Britain`s Got Talent. Now, she can`t be completely naive - she put herself up for ridicule and sang her song. Luckily for her it struck a chord with people and she`s enjoying the publicity as a result, but Brooker`s comments about her looks and that "you can see women like her at any bus stop" wasn`t hilarious. It made me think just one thing.

What a ****.

I mean, he could have said she was a lousy singer - fair enough. That was what she was gambling when she stood up in front of the audience and sang.

Now I understand this colourful way of describing people is part of his "schtick", and I suppose fanboys will come flocking to his defence, but it doesn`t shake my opinion.

What a ****.

At least I know I`m not missing anything the next time I don`t watch him.

I don`t think you got what he was saying.
His point was that `the media` have made her out to be this hideous beast that has an angel`s voice, when in fact she`s just a bit plain looking. He was having a go at the news media, not her at all. As I recall (and I`m not going to go and re-watch it yet to back up what I`m saying) he never attacked her looks himself, but rather suggested what some of the broadcasts seemed to be saying about her.

If I`d been watching on my own, I`d give him the benefit of the doubt, but general consensus of the family members watching the show was he was having a rant about ugly women.

You should know that once you are in the media spotlight then all aspects of your life will be scrutinised including your looks/dress sense etc

Just watched it and I don`t think he was attacking her at all. He was having a go at the media portrayal, just as he did with the Jade Goody stuff.

On a film related note, anyone else notice the Cantina Tango from Star Wars and part of Ennio Morricone`s score for The Thing playing in the background?

You seem to be a bit over sensitive about the `Hairy Angel` Mark. Admit it, you`re in love with her, aren`t you?

Mark. I think you and your family have all got it wrong. As the others have said he is having a pop at the media and the way they have created the ugly but can sing story. He was having a pop at the people who have bought in to the story too, who rather than go on about how well she can sing, are amazed that she can sing at all with the looks she has.
