Gym instructors

I`ve been using a local gym for a while now and it struck me today how overweight some of the instructors are.
Obviously you don`t be fit to have the knowledge on how to get people fit so am I being Fatist or would you lot prefer anyone who gave you exercise instruction to be something of an example and toned themselves or not.

Haha!
This takes me back to when I was a regular gym-goer.
Went just about every night for nigh-on 10 years.
I used to laugh at the shape of some of the instructors too. :/
IMO, yes, you should be in good shape to expect to be taken seriously as an instructor.
Same as I wouldn`t expect a fat bastard to give me dietary advice, or a toothless crone to be my dentist.

I can;t stand gyms but if I did go i;d think I would think that

1) if the instructors are too thin then they dont know how to be that healthy
2) if they are obviously overweight then i`d wonder why they do the job when they dont exactly practice what they preach

I dont think you`re being fatist, seems you`ve just made an observation about the people you;ve interacted with in their habitat

I hate gyms now too.
I can`t believe I spent so much time in them, TBH.
I was hooked, no doubt about it.

Yeah agree with you Snaps. It`s like your driving instructor not being able to parallel park or something. If they`re telling you how to do something they should be an example.

None of the instructors at either of the gyms I`ve been to have been fat, but a couple weren`t exactly "in shape" either.

Bowfer that`s mad that you used to go so much. I`ve been going 3-4 times a week for probably about 8 years now, no signs of giving up as I enjoy it and hate being out of shape. The only downside is the s*** music (I go with my gf so can`t really take my mp3) and the occasional knobheads hogging machines,

What made you stop going if you don`t mind me asking? Was it a gradual thing or just stopped going suddenly?

My reason for going started out as a desire to get fit for motorbike racing.
When I jacked in the bikes, I kept going.
Then I more or less had an `epiphony`, realised I was being a bit sad/daft and stopped.
I tried going less frequently, but that didn`t work.
Didn`t see the point in once or twice a week at all.
So it was all or nothing, I chose nothing. :D
Can`t say I miss being in the shape I was in either.
I don`t `need` it and the missus prefers me the way I am.
Fat enough that people I know notice, but not so fat that strangers think I`m a lardass! :D

I know what you mean about instructors. There was a twenty-something girl at my last gym who was really obese. Luckily she never did my programme or personal training, and if she had of done I wouldn`t have too pleased necessarily. If someone is going to encourage me to get fit/lose weight/tone up, then they surely need to come close to setting some kind of benchmark?
