Woolworths...what went wrong??

I admit not having bought cds/dvds/games there for ages because they seem pricey compared to the online free delivery retailers.

Exactly. Failed to adapt to a changing market. Often pop into the one over the road for some pre-cinema snack, and the DVDs/BDs are usually at full RRP. Yeah, right. HMV are the same and they were in trouble a while back.

i had to laugh at their advert for the new Indy disk - ONLY £14.99!!

this was when adsa & morrisons were knocking out the same disk(s) for £8

I went into my local Woolies store and told the girl I had put anthrax in the pick n` mix. She replied in a docile voice....`Ohhh , its not my department...`!!?!

I worked for them as a Store Manager for them for 9 years... unfortunatley they haven`t really done anything wrong! The rise of the internet sites selling media, and the supermarkets attacking their markets has affected them! You only have to look at Mr.Bruce to see the effect the out of town supermarkets and internet have had to the high street.

Don`t understand why Sevenoaks don`t do internet sales, sometimes retailers bring about their own downfall.

Its a sign of a changing market, just as the rise of supermarkets caused the loss of thousands of local butchers bakers and greengrocers, the internet (and the continued rise of supermarkets) has started to make a huge impact on the high street. There is no way a high street store which has all the costs of heating/lighting/cleaning/staffing can compete with an internet retailer who only has to worry about a huge warehouse. Woolworths is also guilty of being a `everything and nothing` store what does it sell? not enough toys to be a toy shop, not enough dvds/cd`s to be a music store, not enought books to be a bookshop, its trying to be everything to everyone, its rarely my first choice for anything, we have HMV for music/dvd, Waterstones for books, Toys R Us not far away for toys, ASDA for cheap kids clothes, WHSmiths for magazines and stationary ..thats basicly Woolies core products. Woolworths is just a slightly more upmarket Wilkinsons

I suppose Im as guilty as many for not visiting the town centre much, I live just shy of a mile away from the town centre yet I can count the times Ive been into the centre of town on one hand this year. Now thats not all down to the internet of course, blame the out of town supermarkets/diy shops and retail parks, its no wonder high street shops are struggling as I cant be the only one. I donmt think Woolies are doing anything wrong other than not moving with a changing market and like a lot of other shops finding themselves out priced in a very competative market, you can only compete for so long against supermarkets selling the latest release dvd` as a loss leader, because they can absorb the loss on each dvd with a penny on bread or a couple of pence on eggs and milk

I`m with bob up there. I live about 10 miles away from our town centre, but about 4 from 2 different tesco stores. If I need anything at all I just go there. Getting into town requires the same amount of preparation as going on a day trip to the seaside. packing the car, getting there, finding a parking space in an overcrowded carpark, trying to make sure the boy doesn`t run under the front of a car while you`re trying to get his buggy out of the car...
