so we are off to florida in november and have two other families who are also going but we all have diffrent hotels,

the plan is to get in touch while over there and have a few days out together, origionaly my dad thought he could use his mobile but he tried it in barbados earlyer this year and it didnt work.

at the moment we could phone each others hotel the night before or i have been told to try wallmart as soon as we get there and get a couple of cheap pay as you go mobiles, would this work?

so as i said anyone got any ideas thanks.. :)

Mobiles are good for distances over a couple of miles, but as the doc says walkie talkies are handy.

We always take them with us to the US, since we head off around the various parks/shops and then just shout on those when we want to meet up again.

They can be bought in Walmart for silly money (ie £10 ish for 2 of them)

EDIT: 2 things could be restricting your dad`s mobile working. 1) The phone isn`t able to use the US networks, it needs to be tri-band.
or 2) Your dad`s account isn`t set up for roaming. Can be resolved with a call to customer services

Smoke signals were good enough for the native Americans so should be good enough for you. :)

Go to Wal-Mart or K-Mart and buy a pre paid phone..around $30-$40 including $10 calling credit..remember tho that u are charged when u receive calls also.....still cheap as chips tho....just add ur numbers to all phones and u should be fine.... Think its called Trak Phone..and it dont use sim cards u need to type in numbers from phone cards and it isnt half a pain tbh.

Unless you happen to be in Universal.

When there a couple of years ago most of the natives seem to use the walkie talkies already mentioned but I think they only come in pairs don`t they.

Alternately take your phones and buy three cheapo simms with talk time included.

Just a word of warning, my mate went to US recently and said he found it difficult finding sim-only deals, they are not as prevalent as over here, if you go with the sim option you might be better off buying a few sims from ebay before u go. Also iirc t-mobile is the best network for coverage out there, hope that helps :)
