Minimum Wage increase of 3.8% in October

Just thought I would let you all know.

There are different levels of National Minimum Wage, depending on the age of the worker. The rates from 1 October 2007 are as follows:
• adults (which means people aged 22 and over) receive the full rate of £5.52 an hour
• a `development rate` of £4.60 an hour is paid to workers aged 18 to 21 inclusive
• young people (those older than school leaving age and younger than 18; you`re under school leaving age until the end of summer term of the school year in which you turn 16) receive £3.40 an hour
Apprentices under the age of 19 are not entitled to the National Minimum Wage. Apprentices who are 19 or over and in the first 12 months of their apprenticeship are not entitled to the National Minimum Wage.

New National Minimum Wage rates from 1 October 2008
The rates from 1 October 2008 will be:
• adults (which means people aged 22 and over), £5.73 an hour
• workers aged 18-21, £4.77 an hour - the `development rate`
• young people (those older than school leaving age and younger than 18; you`re under school leaving age until the end of summer term of the school year in which you turn 16), £3.53 an hour

Disagree. Good idea, badly implemented. I was against it at first after all the uproar from the CBI and Conservatives, think it`s worked to a degree but not as well as it should have done.

Far too many employers still don`t implement it correctly and a minimum wage should be just that, not with caveats about development rates or anything else.

Go that way, really fast. If something gets in your way, turn...

And those who dance will spin and turn,
And those who wait will wait no more,
And those who talk will hear the words,
And those who see will fade and die,
And those who laugh will surely fall,
And those who know will always feel their backs against the thin wall...

In other UK finance news, mini-ISA investments go up to £3600 in cash and £7200 (the deficit in stocks and shares) in April, yet the base rate`s gone down a bit to even things out....In case anyone wasn`t up to speed :>)

Doesn`t work in PCs does he? PC hardware jobs pay s*** though. You need to get into 3rd line support minimum before the rates become worthwhile.

A basic desktop support guy in my firm earns approx £26k starting salary.
Admittedly this is in London, and its for an investment bank...but surely there are firms outside of London paying much better than minimum wage for that kind of level of support?

Good and bad news realy...

The minumum wage has stopped a lot of folks being exploited BUT its kept low wages low, all we get come paytalks time is `your getting over minimum wage..` yes we are but only just. Id say a lot of companies use the minimum wage as an excuse not to give rises as big as they might have done in previous years
