Where can I get some ants?

Gareth Williams (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 29th December 2007, 15:32

I got one of those spangly Antquarium thingies for Christmas and have been looking for ants to populate it with but can`t find any :/

Any David Attenboroughs in here know the best place to find them in the Winter? (without paying)

Thanks :)

Suck a boiled sweet and put it on the garden path. But you might have to wait til spring.

When you do catch ants, only use those; don`t go and get more later on cos I think they`ll kill each other if they`re not from the same nest.

:D That sounds awesome!

I think I might put a divider down the middle, put two separate lots of ants in and when they have established their respective colonies, remove the divider and sit and watch the carnage!

Thanks for the tip! ;)

You don`t just want random ants - you need a queen too, or you`ll just end up with a bunch of unemployed, aimless asbo ants on crack.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Hey, I also got one of these funky antquariums (well, my son did) and we can`t find any ants for love nor money! In the summer, we had nests under the lawn - they swarmed the patio, and snuck indoors on several occasions.

But now? Nada - diddly squat!

There is an order form included to buy them by mail order, but they recommend that you don`t do this as it is better to find local ants than to expect them to live through the dangers of a Royal Mail delivery!

It`s the funkiest bit of kit I`ve seen for ages - blue LEDs shine up through this blue sugar-gel goo that the ants will live in. Apparently they need nothing else to survive as the gel contains all the nutrients required for a healthy ant to live in!

We will keep a daily lawn-side vigil looking for creepy crawlies. Hopefully they haven`t all snuffed it or hybernated or whatever ants do in the winter!
