Road pricing to go ahead

bandicoot (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 22nd May 2007, 07:27

Well the news we were dreading came out today, road pricing to start in 10 towns in England, starting with manchester in 2010.

After 2 Million of us voting online to oppose this bill, it is going though parliment shortly.

You realise this is only the start, to price us off the roads, it will just be like parking charges and escallate.

What sort of Pollitians have we in this counrty if this bill is passed.

This is a country that relies on car and lorry transport, and as far as I can see, these Pollitians want us back on our bikes :/

Why should we be the most taxed country on Earth for transport ?

We have what I first called 25 years ago an `Elected Dictatorship`, now at last others are beginning to see that`s what it is. Listen to the public (pawns, little people), promise the public (pawns, little people) everything then do the oposite to what the public (pawns, little people) want, that`s the sort of politicians we have in this country.

They really are a bunch of c***s. I see Bristol is listed as one of the cities that could be trialling this. Luckily we have a fantastic public transport system. Oh wait, I`m having a f***ing laugh... It wouldn`t be so bad if we didn`t already pay such a ridiculous amount of duty on our fuel. I mean come on, how the hell do they expect people to work? It not like we all live and work in our local communities any more. Most people have to travel a fair way to their jobs and public transport just isn`t viable.

I tried catching the bus to work from South to North Bristol for a short period a few years ago. I say bus, I had to get two, which were late most of the time (if they turned up at all), causing me to miss my connecting bus and be late for work. For this privilege I had to get up much earlier, stand around in all sorts of weather, deal with surly bus drivers and passengers, take about three times as long to get to work and pay more or less the same as it would have cost me by car (including running costs) but without the other freedoms afforded by car ownership.

If they introduce this sort of crap it`ll get to the point where it`s just cheaper for some people to say `f*** it` and go on the dole.

funnily enough. from my radio listening this morning, you are not the first person to say that.

Someone said they are talking about charging £1.30 per mile on some roads. If that was the case and I had to travel on these roads then In theory I could travel to a few certain client of mine and it would cost me about as much to get there as my company would be paying me for that days work - somehow that doesnt add up!! (also note in those situation I would have NO alternative but to use the car as public transport would be unfeasible to use given the stuff i`d need to take and the distance i have to travel)

Too true.

What surprises me is people and ministers who think that People who drive miles upon
miles to get to work, or drive during peak hours, do so because they have a choice.

Excuse me...

People who drive miles upon miles do not do so just for the sake of it, but because that is where their Job is. If people could find a suitable job nearer home then they would have done ages ago.

People who drive during peak hours do so because their Bosses expect them to be at work at a particular time.

Those who say : "get a job closer to home", "use transport", or "move closer to the workplace" etc, etc need a brain transplant. There are generally no suitable jobs nearer to home for qualified people- unless one wishes to work in no-brainer areas such as Mc Donalds, Tesco, etc. (service industries). Public transport is a joke and for me adds 2 extra hours into my journey. Why should extra 10 hours of my life (per week) be spent on Public transport when I could spend that with my family. And, why should I uproot my family and move closer to work when I have spent my entire life in one area and it is only by job that is far.

A colleague of mine travels 40 miles to get to work and does so not because he likes it, but because he has no choice. Either he travels to a job that pays well, or finds a much lower paid job nearer home which would affect his family.

If this Country introduces pay-as-you-travel that results in people travelling to work to be heavily penalised, the message this country is sending is that working does not pay. So, people would rather go on the dole than to travel that extra bit to secure a job.

The government gets away with these things because I have found the British people seem to accept everything without venting their displeasure. (Except the Poll Tax. Now that was one backlash).

The government knows that we will whinge, but then eventually quieten down and accept it. Successive governments never seem to undo what other governments have done, so once this is introduced it will lead to more increases.

What about the effect on inflation? If i have a delivery I will have to pass the added cost on.

As will every other courier and company that delivers goods. There will be a dramatic knock on effect to prices in general.

You probably wont have to worry Doc - most people wont have enough money to run a car into town, pay for the parking and then buy goods from the shops

Oooh,so that`ll be us up to something like 16 `taxes` involved in owning a car ?
VAT on the purchase.
Tax on the fuel
Roadtax.
VAT on servicing costs
VAT on parts costs

etc.etc...

Still,it`s only for our own good you see.
Personally,I`m bloody thankful we have a government that care about us so much. :¦
