Can anyone identify this type of spider...?

FizzyBear (Competent) posted this on Monday, 7th May 2007, 14:43

Hi folks,

I found this rather alarming little chap hanging from the top of the stairs this morning. His body is almost 2cm long - a little too big for comfort. He doesn`t look like any domestic spider I`ve ever seen. Is climate change turning them all into monsters like this..?

Any ideas on the type? Is it dangerous?

For some reason, I clicked on the links you both provided - and then clicked onto the uksafari `spiders` section for more information.
I am TERRIFIED of spiders!
Why did I do it? Now I can barely move from my seat just in case there`s one behind me, it`s ridiculous! I know I`m being silly, but I completely freaked myself out and I haven`t a clue why I did it.

Mr Jacob appears to be correct.
Even if they are native to Australia.

Thanks for the replies - I`m happy to report that the invasion is now over. I`m glad it`s turned out to be harmless as one of the cats has just eaten the 8-legged little blighter!!!!! :o

That doesn`t put my mind at rest. Just imagine what would result if the two creatures merged together a la Fly! A spider-cat? :/

I understand there are no spiders in Antarctica...
