Page 1 of fog lights

this will sound like a stupid question i know but i have not long passed driving test and 99% of my lessons were in decent weather conditions.what i want to know is are fog lights and full beam lights the same thing? thank you as i said i know this is a stupid question to most people

full beam lights are when u pull back the headlights lever on the steering wheel. the lights are then "dipped". Dipping the lights is to let other road users know that u are there on the road in bad conditions such as fog.
Fog lights are brighter lights fitted to some cars to be turned on in bad weather for much the same reason.
i do believe however that driving around with ur foggies on in clear weather is an offence - im sure Marksparks999 will confirm.

You have you dipped lights, full beam then the even brighter ones (high beam I think) you use for flashing people.

Front foglights are totally different to the modes above and come from lower down on the car below your headlights. There there to shine below the fog and light up the road as sometimes in heavy fog your main beam gets reflected back and you can`t see very far in front of you! Scary experience if it happens to you on a dark country road!

What???

Sidelights are the first position on your headlight switch.

Dipped headlights is the next position and used for most driving conditions at night.

Then, to switch from `dipped` headlights to `main beam` (if you are on an unlit road WiTHOUT cars coming towards you)you push the relevant stalk away from you. You can also pull it towards you to flash the main beam (even when the lights are off)

Fog lights should only be used when visibilty in less than 100 metres (I think) not if there is slight drizzle or you just think it looks flash.

One thing that really gets my back up is people who park on the wrong side of the road (facing oncoming traffic) and leave their fookin headlights on - blinding everybody coming towards them....morons. >:(

No, fog lights and full beam are not the same. To be honest in bad fog, full beam lights are not only useless but dangerous as all they do is illuminate the fog and make it almost impossible to see where you are going. `dipped` headlights light the road and provide much better visibility in fog (but if the fog is very bad its probably best not to be driving at all :) )

Fog lights are seperate your headlights, usually fitted low down on the front bumper, some newer cars come with them as standard, some as an optional extra but they are not a legal requirement (although a rear fog light is) these lights are on a seperate switch to your `regular` lights ..(the switch will have a headlight symbol on it with a wavy line thru it)

As the fog lights are on a seperate switch it can be easy to forget they are on, so remember to turn them off when the fog clears or you get to your destination as driving with fog lights on when its not foggy is dangerous as the fog lights are VERY bright and dazzle other road users...theres nothing more annoying than following a car that has its fog lights on when its not foggy!

I hate (rear) fog lights - even, unless it`s REALLY foggy, in fog. >:(
Most people at the slightest hint of a mist put them on - quite needlessly and dangerously.
Often, on newer cars they`re NOT on a separate switch but part of the headlight dial (if it`s a dial). It is more often pulled out one click to turn fronts on and another to turn rears on. Switching lights off makes the dial go in again - meaning you can`t `forget` they`re on for the next trip.
"...full beam is the same as dipped... - LOL.

Yep used my fog lights for only the third time yesterday couldnt see shizzle without them. Do a good job but I have people who have them on for no reason in the daytime I turn on my rear ones for a minute just to annoy them. I dont really

Edit--
I am surprised that they do not tell you these things in your very first lesson like this is the indicator, here are the lights etc etc I thought it would be basic knowledge for learning I am sure back when I learnt they taught it. Did you learn with a big company or private instructor either way you should tell him/her as they may assume that people know and dont teach it when clearly they should.

I was taught at an early age as my Dad drove that dipping was to avoid blinding oncoming traffic (the road between Exeter & Exmouth was unlight when I was a child) when some inconsiderate git didn`t dip, to slow down & stop if need be & look to the left & use the side of the road as my guide until the offending road user was past.

I think I was asked about it on my driving test as well.
