Is the pass plus driving certificate worth doing?

hermy (Competent) posted this on Sunday, 29th October 2006, 15:51

I`ve also recently passed my test and have been looking around but I`ve also tried getting insurance quotes for cars i`m interested in, the thing is I may do a pass plus next week if It means I could potentially save a lot on insurance (might as well be in my pocket after all) has anyone done this, is it beneficial. ive tried to get insurance quotes online but even the ones that do it don`t seem to give you the option of getting a quote online for pass plussers, don`t mind phoning for quotes just find it less time-consuming online.

Not too sure how much difference doing that makes, perhaps a few quid, but if youve got enough money spare and like driving, then doing your HGV 1 or 2 would cost a few grand, but you could then find a driving job upto about 40k a year if you do the tankers.

I have a class 2 and earned £30k a year five years ago, didnt suit me tho and i took redundancy and set up my own business instead.

Ps........My girlfriend just added that she did hers and it reduced her insurance by nearly £150 so perhaps im wrong and you should do it after all !!!

Richie

pps.......Motorquotedirect give you the option to add if youve passed a pass plus or not. Hope this helps, good luck.

I did mine as soon as I passed, and at the time they said it like having a no claims bonus in your 1st year of driving.

I can`t remember how much I saved but it was worth paying for the few extra lessons, and every extra driving lesson helps when you learn anyway, especially since youdo night, motorway etc.

1 thing though is that you won`t get the pass plus discount your 2nd year, `cos it only lasts for 1 year, so your 2nd year etc may cost more than 1st until you build up no claims.

edit: Instructor also recommended to me getting gf and mum insured on my car `cos that could lower the premium.

Hey mate

When i passed my driving test (a good few years ago), i was quoted over £1000 insurance for a F-reg Fiesta 1.0l. The cost of doing PassPlus was £100. Once i finished the course (a bit of motorway driving, night driving) the insurance quote cam down to just over £700, so i made my money back by doing it. The insurance company i used was Budget (i think)

So in my opinion it was definately worth doing,

Hope this helps a little
Nobby

My 17 year old son was quoted by ecarinsurance £1600 to insure a 1.5 Peugeot 106 without Pass Plus. With Pass Plus this came down to £1,050, cost him £95 to do so well worth the spend in his case.

Sam.

I used moneysupermarket.com (I think that was the site) and confused.com (price comparison sites) and I were quoted £732.90 by bell insurance except I cannot buy online will have to phone tomorrow, and I were quoted £801 by admiral.com but when you try to buy online it doesn`t work so I`m hoping when i phone either tomorrow they`ll honour the prices, although if it ended up with admiral I could not have the 10% online discount due to their site not allowing you to buy. there have been a few problems with insurance sites I`ve checked.

It depends on what type of insurance you are getting. I believe I may be wrong that if you are applying for your own insurance then you can save a lot if you are going to be a named or 3rd party driver then check. As I found when I first passed most companies did not give me a discount or if they did the six lessons at £20 a pop didnt actually save me much.

Also it will only apply for the first year after you pass the test I think.

Hope this helps

With Bell insurance I were quoted £639.45 if I included another named driver on the insurance, would there be any disadvantages to this as surely everyone would be doing it if it brought the price down. This is the best for me so far (£742.35 with just myself insured, same company) if anyoneones looking ecarinsurance reduce their price significantly if you have pass plus, Bell insurance and Admiral seem to specialise more with `newer` drivers with zero or low NCD.
