Having a Wedding List... Should we or shouldn`t we? Help please!

My fiance and I are getting married in Jamaica next year, with about 12 family members coming along to it. We are planning on having a party/reception a couple of weeks after we arrive home, to about 150 people.

Now, the done thing for a wedding in this country is to have a wedding list, but considering we aren`t getting married here, would it be out of the question to have one? FWIW, we have invited alot of family and friends to our wedding abroad, but they cannot come due to costs.

We think that having a wedding list wouldn`t be too much of a problem, but are still slightly uncomfortable about it. Should we or shouldn`t we? I mean, should we just invite people to the party and hope they bring presents? Obviously we don`t expect anyone to bring anything, or even give us a present, but we feel we would be missing a trick to not have a list.

So what do you think...? We`re a bit stuck and wanted to see what the common consensus might be on it.

Thanks, as always. :D

I think a wedding list is ok, I`m getting married next year, so I`ve been thinking of these things a bit recently.

Even if you were having the wedding here, would you invite all the reception ppl to the wedding?

Our wedding will be family with a few mutual friends, then the reception more ppl.

I`ve been to wedding recepetions before where I`ve taken a gift, when i haevn`t been to the wedding.

To me the idea of the gift is show best wishes to the couple, not as a fee for going to the acual wedding :)

Getting married next year too and having our honeymoon at Couples Negril Jamaica. We are not going to do a wedding list as we already have what we need but won`t say no to gift vouchers and such like.

Then again.......

Amazon does wedding gift lists! :D

Is that the time? Damn you Xbox 360!!!!

That`s a point 2 we went to recently

1 - they asked for foreign money for country they were going to
2- they asked for gift vouchers for a travel agents. and that was in our invite which was reception only. so if they can do that you can have a list:)

Get yourself a list - go to somewhere like debenhams and use thier service.

Tell people that if they so wish, there is a wedding lists available. Lets face, most people who go to (a weddingy celebration thing) would bring somthing, so it would stop you getting 300 napkin rings.

Yep. If you don`t want 100 toasters, do a list or specify vouchers. Doesn`t have to be somewhere pricey like Debenhams. Argos is good.

Most people who go to a wedding reception will want to buy a present for the happy couple. A list takes the guesswork out of it, so it`s a good thing all round. :)

or you could always ask them to make a donation to your favourite charity as an option if it helps you feel less guilt?

Ben, we done the same as you (as you know) and we had a list at debenhams. You will find that most people will want to get you something. We also told everyone that came with us that we did not expect a gift from them as they had forked out to come to Jamaica. (they still did though).

Good luck with it all.

Definitely have a list. People aren`t obliged to buy you anything, but if they do want to get you a gift, you`ll get something that you want/need. A few of your guests will still "think outside of the box" and get some gifts that aren`t on the list, and having a list can also stimulate their imagnations too!
