You don`t have to go that far !
As the song goes "The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen"
I`ve seen them many a time whilst sitting in my back garden.
Mind you, that was years ago, before the estate got bigger and light pollution took over. >:(
You can barely see the stars on a clear night now. :/

I saw them from the North Norfolk Coast about 15 years ago :D Much cheaper than going foreign.

I`ve seen them twice in deepest darkest Somerset. The first time was a good number of years ago (about 15 or so), but that was a very weak (faint) display. I only noticed them as I was driving through the countryside one night. The second time was about 3-4 years ago, I was going home after finishing a late shift, at first I thought that it was some light reflecting on the car window from the car stereo until I wound the window down. Then followed a meandering trip along the motorway to home (thank god it was in the early hours with no traffic or police about ;)). The display was quite amazing to see with multi-coloured curtains of light waving in the sky. Got home and dragged the OH out to watch the display (not quite the same enthusiasm as me though!).
There should have been a good display last year as there was a period of increased solar activity (more likely to get a display at lower latitudes under those conditions), but unfortunately nothing came of it.
As to the question of paying to go and see them specifically, well if you`re really into it or just flush then OK, but I must admit, they are a wonder to behold.

Have you tried switching it on........?

Drove from Glasgow up to Perth late one night last year after there was a bit of news coverage about high solar activity and a good chance of seeing the lights.

Had to find somewhere really out of the way to avoid light pollution, but it was well worth it. Was only really red/pink ones we saw and I`d love to do the whole Arctic Circle thing for a better show but the fact you could spend a fortune and be unlucky and not see them really puts me off.

Yep remember that last year, I live in Northern Ireland, Derry to be precise and I seen them last year during all that solar activity, they were more blue and green and slightly faint but you could definitly tell what they were

Great nights viewing!

A couple of years ago I went on the Norwegian "Hurtigruten" (local ships) up into the Arctic Circle and back. Unfortunately the Northern Lights didn`t appear.
The best holiday I have ever, ever had though.
