Recent School Uniform-"religion" Case

Andy c (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 8th March 2005, 13:28

So it seems if you feel strongly enough about your religion the courts have decided you can wear your religious garb to school.
From Monday my son has decided he`s off in his Jedi cloak, leggings, boots and waist slung lightsaber and woe betide anyone who gets in his way and exibits tendancies of the dark side!. :) :) ;)

Which in my opinion is exactly what the whole school uniform thing was. Insignificant.

Just blown up by the media to get us thinking one girl in one school had a greater meaning than it really has.

It contrasts with a very similar case in France where you can`t wear anything overtly religious in a state school, and a court ruled in favour of a school which banned the wearing of headscarfs etc.

I generally agree with the separation of religion from government, but there`s a different principle involving freedom of religious expression. A tricky one...

If holier-than-thou girls are allowed to ignore a school`s uniform policy then it`s discriminating against *all* other children for *all* faiths, including other Muslim girls, who have to wear the uniform no matter how much they dislike the tie, colour or not being allowed to wear trainers, etc. The school went out of their way to have an acceptable uniform and the girl previously *wore* that uniform!

There was a case a few years ago where a girl went to court to be allowed to wear trousers - and she wasn`t allowed. If you don`t like the school dress code, then go to another school; it`s not a fashion show and it`s not a place of worship.

A question.
As an ex teacher of science,(only 2 years, couldn`t take all the crap), I wouldn`t let anyone in my lab wearing the Islamic dress I`ve seen in all the photographs of this case,
purely on safety grounds, but where would I stand ?
Because If I allowed her in wearing that outfit, and she caught fire off a bunsen burner, I`d be responsible.
But if I stopped her coming in would I be accused of religious bias ??
Can schools and teachers win on this one ??
