Postal Services (state of)

royd (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 16th May 2001, 18:51

Hi all
Having been exchanging and on occasions buying and selling dvd`s (not for profit just for fun) for the last couple of month`s. I have probably posted about 15 or 16 items..dvd`s, cheques etc. plus had things posted to me.
Out of these up to now 2 cheques sent to me have not arrived and have had to be resent, 1 cheque I sent went astray and 1 dvd sent to me never arrived (yes it was someone I trust).
Has anyone else had these problems.

I disagree. I have never had any problems with the postal service in this country. I think we are lucky to live with a system that has next day delivery nationwide, or same day in London first class! In the US you have to pay way over the odds for a normal service that does not guarantee delivery. If you`re after that you have to pay for UPS or Fedex.

The only problems I have encountered are from the other end - the person/organisation posting the item - and from outside the country. My first order from play247 never arrived and is still "untraceable" (though it was quickly replaced). That got me suspicous but I have not had any problems since. Which is surprising given that the parcels are clearly marked "optical media" and some PO gimp could filch them because the company will simply replace it.

Bad luck matey.

hi mate im a postman and believe me we get bad mouthed all the time were not thiefs we dont lose your parcels on purpose but sometimes things happen like youve not put the post code on or youve put the wrong number on it..if your sending a check or money you should send it by registered mail not normal mail that way you get it within 24 hours and also your insured against theft/fraud.if people are sending you money tell them to send it by registered mail and phone them for the trace number go online to royal mail and you can see weather or not theyve posted it or not..hope this helps mate

Over the last year, I`ve successfully completed more than 120 transactions on e-bay, 50 on yahoo auctions, not to mention numerous online orders from play247,movietyme and amazon etc. In this time I`ve not had one single bad experience due to the postal service ! In my experience, some bidders/sellers use them as an exuse to cover their own tardiness + shortcomings......Maybe you`ve you`ve just been unlucky Royd....

Hi
I think you have misunderstood my point, I certainly am not slagging of the post office or "The Posties" :-) as I think we have a good service .I was just wondering what percentage of other peoples post goes missing.
Looks like I have just been unlucky up to now huh.

Hi, here goes my opinion.

I`ve never had any problems with things going missing but often there are long delays in delivery, especially local (Essex). I recieve a fair ammount of incoming post at work and it`s not umcommon for 1st class post to take 4 or 5 days, rarely anything less than two. Second class usually takes around 5 or 6 days. Occaionally you get the odd next day but this is rare. Strangley though a delivery from Scotland or something will arrive quite quickly. I suppose a lot may depend on where you live.

it shouldnt take 5-6 days to get anywhere in england .it all goes of what time you post it if your before 8 am itll be next day..after 12 am it might take longer depends on how close the destination is from the train depot
.royal mail now classes second class mail the same as first class the only difference is if it arrives in the office after 10 am it is left in till the next day..
but send it by registered/recorded mail and it takes 24 hours to be delivered gauranteed any where in the u.k.

Postie31 - I know, and I think everyone appreciates that postal workers are getting tarred with the same brush for a small number of criminals working within the Royal Mail system. My Dad was a postie for 29 years and is glorying in his retirement away from those management a**eholes who have let the system get into the state it`s in. Consignia? B***ocks more like.

Unfortunately, DVDs do seem to be unusually prone to becoming "lost in the post", and one Canadian retailer (DVDDynamic) has actually told me that they are having trouble with their packages going missing in the UK post - specifically at Mt. Pleasant Sorting Office. Now, when somebody names names like that, you can`t help wondering if there`s something going on we ought to know about.
