Page 1 of Diesel`s under 1549cc?
General Forum
Apart from the Corsa turbo diesel can anyone think of any other diesel motors under 1549cc. Dosh it tight but wouldnt mind a cheap diesel to knock around in!

About now im having amnesia and deja vu. I think Ive forgotten this before :D
RE: Diesel`s under 1549cc?
Citroen C2/C3 1.4Hdi. Amazing fuel economy and good engines (apparently). I`ve got a Citroen Xsara Picassole and despite being a biggish car with a fairly sizeable 2.0Hdi, it still does 47mpg on average - and that`s mostly short trips. You can supposedly get up to 60mpg. Advert over :)
VW do a 3 cylinder 1.4 Tdi
Officially the world`s most economical car.
Some geezer drove across the continent in an unmodified one and averaged over 100mpg.
He was an economy driving expert, but still an amazing feat in a standard car.
We have 4 in our fleet.
Very reliable and always popular when they are offered to staff for sale at the end of the 3 years.

What you have to remember regarding Diesel is you could be looking at a false econony.
Yes, they get better mileage from fuel, but repairs AND servicing costs are much higher, and service regimes have to be stuck to more religously.
My standard service on my Passat is £150-odd, and thats at special "taxi" rates.
My Timing Belt service (due in about 10,000 miles) is going to leave me slightly the lighter of £400+
These are skimping jobs, and with a diesel timing belt, not something that`s worth "chancing yourself"
I thikn the old way to work it out was, if you`re doing less than 16,000 miles per year, it`s cheaper to run a petrol, if you do more, then Diesel`s yer man.
Jimbo : oÞ <~~ 1.9TDi 110BHP VW Passat SE and I`d never buy one again....

I don`t agree.
The difference in list price is often more but when you come to actually laying the dosh down you`ll get just a good deal as any petrol car.
Secondly, yes the fuel savings are greater the more miles you drive (obviously) but even a small mileage driver will notice the difference in fuel consumption.
I currently drive an Audi A4 130tdi and get 50mpg no matter how I drive it.
I`m getting 550 miles to a tank of diesel.I can go for weeks before topping up.Anyone would notice that.
Thirdly,I`ve seen little evidence here of servicing being higher and,in fact, actual service intervals tend to be longer,so they need less actual servicing for a given mileage.
Lastly, they are usually far more reliable and last far longer than their petrol conterparts which is why practically every commercial vehicle is diesel.
I would also argue that diesels are a better `real world` drive.
The way they deliver their power is far more suited to regular driving than revvy petrol engines.
More low down torque=less gearchanges=easier driving.
If you refer to the thread about `how many cars` you`ll see that I`ve had umpteen different types of cars, petrol and diesel.I wouldn`t go back to petrol now.
Diesels are extremely easily tuned as well..... ;)
Remember guys......1549cc!!
How much have you to spend?
I run about in a 106 1.5D, yeah yeah I know it`s not flash, it`s 9 years old, had it from new, can`t complain really. Regularly get 50+ mpg.
Servicing dead easy, oil `n` filter change regularly, check brakes and tyres. That`s about it. All this can be done yourself if you are that way inclined.
Wouldn`t recommend home servicing on newer models as they now have a bit more technical gubbins in them now.
Good luck!
The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California, less than 100 were made. My father spent 3 years restoring this car.....it is his love.....it is his passion....."it is his fault he didn`t lock the garage!"

The principal is the same no matter what the engine size.
I tell you,the 1.4 turbo diesel VW Polos that we have here give my Audi A4 a run for it`s money up to about 80mph.
All about power to weight.
I get 50mpg from my Audi, they get over 60mpg in the Polos.
Also, turbo diesels are incredibly easy to tune.
A simple plug in box from www.tuningbox.com will release much more power.
The beauty of them is that they can be unplugged in seconds for servicing or breakdowns.
What the dealer doesn`t know can`t hurt them. ;)
Hey presto, you`ve got a car that is more driveable than a petrol, more economical than a petrol and faster too ! :D
How much do those tuning boxes cost, and where can you buy them from? Can`t find any info on the site.
Cheers
